By default, the Z15 comes with either clicky Kailh Bronze switches or Linear Kailh Speed Silver switches. Right out of the box, both options are already high-quality switches. However, users can further customize their keyboards by replacing the stock Kailh switches with the upgrade kits sold by EVGA or by purchasing switches from third-party manufacturers.

The only downside here is the Z15’s 3-pin switch design. By default, this keyboard will not be compatible with many of the premium 5-pin switches offered by brands such as Gateron and Novelkeys. Users can snip the two extra feet, but that is not recommended since it is an irreversible mod.

Outside of its customizable switches, the other features of the EVGA Z15 feel standard. Gamers coming from other gaming keyboard brands will still feel right at home with the Z15 with its standard layout, configurable macros, and dedicated media keys/shortcuts.

In addition, the Z15 is no slouch when it comes to performance, as EVGA is very proud of the low latency performance of the Z15. Lastly, the EVGA Z15’s design language is very similar to the brand’s other offerings. There is a pronounced logo on top, and the keyboard is overall a bit on the bulkier side. Overall, the Z15 is great for those looking for a feature-packed gaming keyboard with customizable mechanical switches.

The EVGA Z20 is considered to be an upgrade to the Z15. Most features and design elements are very similar to the Z15. The main difference is that the Z20 features optical-mechanical switches instead of the traditional 3-pin mechanical switches found on the Z15.

Optical keyboard switches have many perks over their standard mechanical counterparts. They are considerably faster and are not prone to wear and tear due to the absence of metal-to-metal contact. The main downside that they have is the lack of variety.

Unlike standard mechanical keyboard switches, there are only a few brands that produce optical keyboard switches. Some notable brands, such as Razer, have adopted this technology. But aside from these brands, optical keyboards haven’t truly taken off.

The lack of variety is perfectly displayed in the Z20. Users will only have access to clicky and linear optical switches out of the box. And since this keyboard is not hot-swappable, there are no other options available.

Aside from its switches, some other notable features of the EVGA Z20 include the addition of a dedicated macropad, 4000 Hz polling rate, and a time of flight sensor. The time of flight sensor detects key movement, and it can trigger your PC to wake up or sleep depending on your activity.

In this keyboard, we can also see the brand’s proprietary rapid-fire switches. Sources do not provide as to when and how these switches are made. As such, it is safe to assume that the brand created it in-house. Unfortunately, these switches do not measure to the quality of, say, Cherry MX switches.

Lastly, we have the C294— a membrane gaming keyboard with low-profile keycaps. The same keyboard runs in the budget category. It is marketed as a keyboard that gives off a mechanical feel to its switches. Moreover, the keyboard being able to connect wirelessly speaks convenience for its end-users. 

What Makes Philips a Good Brand?

Philips is well known for being discreet and minimalistic in its product designs. Evidently, the same applies to their keyboards. They are designed to provide you with a workable typing experience without stressing your budget too much. If asked, is this enough? In the view of a prudent person, perhaps it is.

While it may not sate the picky fingers of the enthusiasts inside our hearts, indeed, it will be the joy of some that only needs the minimum in their computer setups.

Zowie is a brand that has reached legendary status in the gaming community. Many of their mouse designs, including the Zowie FK and EC series, have been used by many professional gamers. Their designs have also inspired many of today’s newer gaming mice. With how good their gaming mice are, many are wondering if their gaming keyboards are also on the same level.

Despite the brand’s rich history with gaming mice and their acquisition by BenQ, Zowie’s mechanical gaming keyboard lineup isn’t up to par with modern mechanical keyboard offerings.  While their keyboard is fully functional and reliable, their design is nothing to write home about. This is a far cry from their gaming mice which continues to be relevant to this day.

Zowie Gear was founded in 2008 with the goal of producing high-quality gaming equipment for competitive gaming. The brand was established during a time when Esports was yet to be established, and competitive gaming wasn’t the norm. So in many ways, Zowie Gear was ahead of their time.

During their time as an independent brand, Zowie released a number of different mouse shapes that revolutionized gaming mice. These include the Zowie FK2 ambidextrous gaming mouse and the EC2 Ergonomic gaming mouse.

These two mouse shapes are still relevant to this day and have inspired many newer gaming mouse designs. In addition, Zowie was also well-known for creating high-quality gaming mousepads.

Despite the brand’s popularity in the competitive gaming scene, Zowie was still not as well-known as bigger brands such as Razer, Logitech G, and Steelseries. However, in 2015, the brand would reach wider recognition when they were acquired by BenQ. Since their acquisition, the Zowie branding has been incorporated into a number of different BenQ products, such as their gaming monitors.

Unfortunately, since BenQ’s acquisition of Zowie, the brand has slowed down with the development and production of new products. They lack newer products such as low latency wireless gaming mice and different sized mechanical keyboards. So despite still being relevant today, they are far behind many of their competitors.

The Zowie Celeritas II is currently the only keyboard that Zowie Gear offers. This keyboard is the follow-up to the Celeritas I and was released after the brand’s acquisition by BenQ. The most notable change from the original Celeritas I keyboard is the red backlit keys and the use of optical-mechanical keyboard switches.

The Celeritas II features a full-size layout, similar to its predecessor. It also has a minimalistic design that mainly focuses on features needed for competing.

Unlike many of today’s gaming keyboards, the Celeritas II only features red LEDs. Also, it only features optical switches, which are based on linear switches.

In a nutshell, optical switches are supposed to emulate the feel of MX-style mechanical switches but add better durability and reliability. The manufacturer of these switches is not stated, so we cannot tell if these have been developed in-house by Zowie or if they have been sourced out from other brands such as Gateron.

Aside from those features, the Celeritas II is a pretty basic keyboard. And unfortunately, these features are not enough for the Celeritas II to be competitive in today’s keyboard market. Many keyboard manufacturers have moved into smaller keyboard sizes to give more room for wider mouse movements.

Also, many newer keyboards offer customizable features such as hot-swappable switches. Unlike Zowie’s mice, the Celeritas II isn’t quite as innovative.

Celeritas I

The Zowie Celeritas I was Zowie’s first gaming mechanical keyboard. Unlike the newer model, the Celeritas I has a more minimalistic look that is reminiscent of brands such as Filco and Leopold. It also seems to be a direct competitor to the old Steelseries 6G/6GV2 keyboards.

Again, this keyboard is very straightforward. It features a full-size layout with Cherry MX switches. The keys are not backlit, and there are no special macro keys to be found. Unfortunately, the Celeritas I is no longer offered. So sadly, Zowie customers do not have the option of having a more minimalistic-looking keyboard with Cherry MX switches.

What Makes Zowie a Good Brand?

As we have mentioned earlier, Zowie is a legendary brand in the gaming community. Their name alone gives users confidence that they are using a product that has been tried and tested by professional gamers. And despite not updating their gaming mice catalog, the FK and EC series is still the go-to for many FPS gamers to this day.

In addition, BenQ’s acquisition of Zowie has helped the brand expand to gaming monitors. BenQ, is, of course, one of the leaders in gaming monitors. So ultimately, Zowie is now able to provide tournament-ready monitors both for professional events and casual gamers. However, when talking about Zowie’s gaming keyboard offering, that is an entirely different story.

Why Look for Alternatives?

As good as their other products are, Zowie’s gaming keyboard lineup is pretty weak. They are a far cry from the revolutionary gaming mice, mousepads, and monitors that the company has been producing. In fact, the Celeriatas II is pretty much outdated.

It lacks many features such as alternate keyboard sizes, hot-swappable switches, and customizable software. It is pretty bland in terms of its feature set and is now pretty much outdated.

It is also pretty apparent that Zowie/BenQ is not interested in competing with other gaming keyboard brands. The brand does not actively promote its gaming keyboards, unlike its other products.

Of course, Zowie’s gaming keyboards are still pretty useable. However, when it comes to overall value, there are many newer gaming keyboards out there that do a better job than Zowie’s current offerings. NZXT is one of the most recognizable brands in the PC gaming industry. Many of their products, such as the NZXT H series PC cases and Kraken series CPU coolers, are highly regarded in the PC gaming and PC building community. And for a long time, NZXT has mainly focused on these types of products. But recently, the brand has decided to further expand their product lineup by offering computer peripherals.

NZXT has recently entered the mechanical gaming keyboard market with the introduction of the NZXT Function keyboards. Just like their other products, the goal of these keyboards is to provide a customizable experience fit for PC enthusiasts. And while their current products are not perfect, their offerings are a step in the right direction.

In this brand review, we will be taking a deeper look into NZXT’s mechanical keyboard lineup. We will also be giving a brief overview of the brand for those not familiar with NZXT. And ultimately, we will help buyers determine if NZXT is a good fit for their setup.

NZXT Brand History

NZXT is based in California, United States, and was founded way back in 2004 to promote and assist the emerging DIY PC Building community. Since their conception, the brand has consistently traversed the same direction: expanding their PC components and building divisions.

The brand’s main line of business is manufacturing PC components such as cases, cooling solutions, motherboards, lighting solutions, and a lot more. The brand is also famous for being a PC Builder company. Their expertise is influential as they are hailed as one of the best in their field.

NZXT is relatively new as a keyboard brand. In fact, they have just introduced their first product line just recently. Their debut was perceived with mixed reviews mainly due to their attempt to introduce a new form factor in the competition. As for their keyboards themselves, they are priced similarly to entry-level competitive products, which inevitably begs the question, can their keyboards survive the competition? Are they good enough based on their price?

The NZXT Function is a keyboard that aims to bridge the gap between gaming keyboards and custom keyboards. It takes what consumers already like with gaming keyboards but adds some much-needed features that are mostly found on custom keyboards.

Like most gaming keyboards, the NZXT Function has a plastic base and an aluminum top frame. It also features North-Facing switches for brighter RGB backlighting.

However, unlike many of its competitors. the NZXT Function features 5-pin hot-swappable switches. It also has a dedicated volume wheel/mute button as well as a dedicated backlight brightness button.

In addition, the NZXT Function comes with pre-lubed plate mount stabilizers as well as pre-lubed Gateron clicky, tactile, or linear switches. And to top it off, the NZXT Function has a detachable USB Type-C cable and removable wrist rest. 

In terms of size and form factor, the NZXT Function is available in three sizes: Full-size, TKL, and 75%. So ultimately, users can choose between traditional keyboard sizes or a more compact 75% layout. 

Despite its high ambitions, the NZXT Function is still not a perfect keyboard. In its stock form, it is highly unlikely to compete with full-blown custom keyboards. However, given its pretty reasonable price, it succeeds at introducing a customizable experience to gamers and more casual users.

NZXT Function Customization

In addition to the customizable features we have mentioned earlier, NZXT also offers more options if you order the Function through their website. On NZXT’s keyboard builder, you have a bunch of different options.

For instance, you can choose between an ISO and ANSI layout. Users can also choose between different switches, including the more premium Gateron Silent Black Inks and Aliaz switches.  Lastly, buyers can choose the color of the keyboard’s case, the color of the keycaps (base and accent keys), and the color of the cable. 

This level of customization is typically not available for most gaming keyboards. And while the NZXT Function is not as customizable as more expensive keyboards such as the Mode65, NZXT’s keyboard builder is still a much-appreciated addition.

Why Buy NZXT Keyboards?

NZXT’s keyboards are bringing customizable features to the mainstream gaming keyboard market. They are one of the few gaming keyboard brands that offer in-depth customization with their keyboards. Aside from hot-swappable switches, many other features such as the color of the keyboard and keycaps can be pre-configured.

The brand manages to bring these features without sacrificing key gaming keyboard features. The function of the keys and the RGB backlighting can still be customized with their included keyboard software. Also, the response time and the reliability of the keyboard are not compromised.
