For FPS fans, tilting one’s keyboard is pretty much the norm. However, for those who are new to FPS esports or those who are coming from other Esports genres such as MOBA, then seeing gamers tilt their keyboards will surely come as a big surprise. Some may even wonder if these tilts are necessary to play these games and if it’s comfortable and safe for the players to use such extreme keyboard angles.

Tilting keyboards began as a necessity in the early days of esports. It then became the norm and was adopted by future generations of gamers who worshipped the pros before them. The act of tilting keyboards is meant to maximize desk space and position your keyboard more naturally.

As surprising as it is, tilting your keyboard does have many health benefits as long as done correctly. And while not exactly necessary, it has helped hone the playstyle of many successful FPS players, easily making it their trademark.

In this article, we will be taking a deep dive into the concept of tilting keyboards for gaming. We will look at its roots in the competitive scene and discuss why professional gamers still do it. And by the end of this article, we will be giving our take on whether or not you should tilt your keyboard while playing games.

Despite its massive popularity in today’s gaming culture, the roots of keyboard tilting are very hard to pinpoint. After all, gamers in the early 2000s did not have access to tools to document themselves, and gaming wasn’t exactly popular, nor did it have a good reputation with the general public. But based on the accounts of gamers, gaming news outlets, and esports personalities, tilting keyboards most likely began with the competitive Counter-Strike scene.

Counter-Strike is one of the oldest Esports titles. The first CS tournament could be traced back as early as 2000. Back then, many peripherals and gaming products we now take for granted did not exist. There were no specialized gaming keyboards and gaming mice.

There were also no gaming desks or extra-large mousepads made specifically for FPS. And most of all, the tournaments that held these competitions did not have any equipment to cater to the Counter-Strike players at the time. Given these limitations, CS players at the time had to make do with what they had.

The biggest problem that they had was space. Most keyboards in the 90s and 2000s were large full-sized keyboards that were meant for office work. For other esports titles, such as Starcraft, Dota, and League of Legends, these large keyboards were perfectly usable. However, for Counter-Strike, large keyboards were a big problem since they limited mouse movement.

Unlike many Esports titles, CS and other tactical shooters require precise mouse movement. And to achieve the highest level of precision, most tactical FPS players prefer using a low sensitivity, which means that they would be making larger mouse movements. Given how large their keyboards were and how limited desk space they had, most CS players resorted to tilting their keyboards to make room for more mouse space.

Tilting Keyboards in Modern Gaming and Esports

Over the course of the next 20 years. Esports greatly evolved. It is now recognized as a real sport, and professional gamers are now legitimate athletes. Given how much attention Esports has received, gaming equipment has also evolved to accommodate the needs of professional gamers.

The gaming peripheral that has significantly evolved is the keyboard. Most keyboards used by professional gamers, including gaming keyboards and custom keyboards, have largely shrunken in size. Unlike the 104 full-size standard layout keyboards used in the past, modern keyboards are now available in smaller form factor options.

Some of the most popular small form factor keyboards include a 60%/65% keyboard which contains 61 to 68 keys, as well as TKL and 75% keyboards which usually have 87 keys. In addition, there are now plenty of desk manufacturers that create specialized products for gamers and other professionals who rely on their computer setups.

Given how optimized today’s equipment and tournament conditions are, the most logical assumption would be that tilting keyboards are no longer necessary. However, that is not the case. Tilting keyboards is still alive and well in the gaming community. And in the next section, we will explain why this is the case.

Better Ergonomics

The main reason why many gamers still tilt their keyboards is better ergonomics. As we have mentioned earlier, the primary goal of gamers tilting their keyboards was to maximize available desk space for their mice. However, without them realizing it, they have also made their keyboards more comfortable and better suited for their playstyle.

The conventional keyboard design and layout, invented in the late 80s and still used by today’s keyboards, is not exactly designed for gaming. It was designed to cater to typists and professionals. IBM’s Model M keyboard design, which most companies later adapted, was based on a typewriter and was meant to help typewriter users transition to computers.

The traditional keyboard design still worked well for most computer games. But when it came to high-level competitive shooters, the conventional computer keyboard layout had its limitations, especially when it came to comfort.

But by tilting the keyboard to a certain angle, gamers place their keyboards in a more natural and comfortable position. And over time, this kind of position can help alleviate the problems that can happen when playing in a non-ergonomic position.

Ergonomic professionals aren’t the only ones claiming the benefits of a tilted/slanted keyboard. Even keyboard designers primarily catering to professionals and typists agree that the standard keyboard layout can be further improved.

Large companies such as Microsoft have released ergonomic keyboards that feature slanted keys that allow users to position their hands in a more natural position without having to tilt their keyboards. The ergonomic keyboard design has also made its way to the custom keyboard world in the form of Arisu/Alice layout keyboards.

And lastly, there are also split keyboards that separate the left and right sides of the keyboard into two individual pieces. This keyboard design allows users to angle and position their keyboard to cater to their needs and typing position. They can even get rid of the other half to maximize desk space for their mouse hand. All these newer keyboard designs and advancements prove that tilting keyboards have legitimate ergonomic benefits for FPS players.

Accommodates to the Preference of Gamers

Another benefit of tilting keyboards while gaming is that it caters specifically to the player’s unique playstyle. There are many accomplished FPS players such as Shaiiko and Tarikwho made their full vertically tilted keyboards their trademark. Even well-known players outside of tactical FPS, such as Tfue and Slappie, who primarily play Fortnite, fully tilt their keyboards vertically.

When asked why they position their keyboards in such a way, it mostly comes down to personal preference. Players like Tfue prefer fully tilting their keyboards to maximize their mouse space, especially for LAN events. Other players fully tilt their keyboards to reach certain keys and develop unique keybindings that would typically be very hard or impossible to do with a traditional horizontally oriented keyboard.

Another possible benefit of these extreme keyboard tilts is that they can place you into a specific posture which can increase concentration or immersion. While there is no scientific study regarding this matter, it is pretty much similar to the concept of having a battle stance or having a correct posture to maximize your efficiency while studying.

Downsides of Tilting Keyboards When Gaming

The downsides of tilting keyboards will only truly start showing when players start doing extreme tilts that ultimately affect their posture. Gamers with extreme tilts on their keyboards tend to assume a hunchback sitting position. And over time, poor posture will cause long-term damage to your back and possibly other body parts.

Studies regarding the posture and sitting position of professional gamers and amateur competitive gamers have only started taking off in the last couple of years. But regardless, it is best to be mindful of your posture and sitting position when experimenting with different levels of keyboard tilt.

Different Keyboard Tilt Positions

Akko Mod005 with Akko PBT Black and Gold Hiragana keycaps

Speaking of different levels of keyboard tilts, let us quickly go over some of the commonly used keyboard positions in gaming. These keyboard tilt angles/levels do not have official names, so we will just describe them based on how tilted they are.

5-degree Keyboard Tilt

The 5-Degree keyboard tilt is arguably the most commonly used keyboard tilt by FPS players. It features a slight tilt and does not deviate too much from the standard fully horizontal keyboard position. Most of the staff here at Keyboardsexpert who play Valorant use this type of tilt.

In our experience, this keyboard position allows our hands to sit in a more natural position. It also allows us to maximize the available room for wider mouse movements. Most of us use 65% keyboards which can still be inadequate when using a very low mouse sensitivity.

To avoid hitting the edge of our keyboards, we move our keyboards farther to the left side of our desks. In doing so, our keyboards are moving further from our natural typing position. But when slightly tilting our keyboards, our left hand assumes a more natural position which is more comfortable for longer gaming sessions.

This type of keyboard tilt naturally came to most of us without even realizing it. We started slightly tiling our keyboards to accommodate our playstyle. We imagine that most players started doing the same thing and are unlikely to be influenced by other gamers.

45-Degree Keyboard Tilt

The 45-degree keyboard tilt is a more pronounced variation of the 5-degree keyboard tilt. It pretty much has the same benefits as the 5-degree keyboard tilt but allows users to reach certain keys easier. It also allows them to anchor their entire arm to their desk.

Some gamers most likely adopted this position due to having a certain type of chair or desk. Regardless, choosing this type of tilt over the more subtle 5-degree keyboard tilt will come down to personal preference and the type of desk and chair you have.

Full Vertical Tilt

Lastly, we have the full vertical tilt. This is the type of keyboard tilt that has been adopted by many professional FPS players. As we have mentioned earlier, it has many benefits, such as easily reaching hard-to-reach keys and maximizing desk space.

However, this type of keyboard tilt will put you into an unconventional sitting position. Feel free to experiment with how well this type of keyboard position works for your playstyle.

Tilting Keyboards in Other Games

Axol Studio Yeti Alice Mechanical Keyboard Kit

The act of tilting keyboards is pretty much exclusive to FPS games. And as we mentioned earlier, the concept of tilting keyboards can be completely foreign to those coming from other Esports titles. So at this point, some may start to wonder, should players of other game genres try tilting their keyboards?

The short answer is, not really. Unlike FPS, other game genres do not need absurd desk space for wide mouse movements. Faker, League of Legends’ most popular and decorated player, is using a very high 3500 DPI. What that tells us is that low DPI is not necessarily needed for these kinds of games, so there is no reason to modify your keyboard position to accommodate more mouse space.

Sure, you can try to experiment with slight keyboard tilts for a more natural position. But in our experience, our hands do not deviate from our typing position in most competitive titles that aren’t shooters.

Now that we know why professional gamers tilt their keyboards, the question is if you should also start tilting your keyboard while gaming. The answer to that is it depends on your personal preference.

Each player has a unique playstyle and will approach the game differently. Thus, there should be no rules that will dictate how they hold their keyboards. Of course, there will still be conventions to help gamers maintain a healthy playstyle. But ultimately, the exact tilt and position you choose should be catered to how you play the game.

If you came from Dota 2 and League and are already used to a regular horizontal keyboard position, there’s nothing wrong with that. And likewise, if you find that tilting your keyboard makes reaching keys such as the CTRL, C, and V keys easier, then feel free to go with it.

Just keep in mind that the keyboard position you choose should not cause any strain on your arms, fingers, or back. If it does, try to correct them immediately to avoid long-term damage.

And lastly, feel free to experiment with different keyboard tilts and angles. You may be surprised at how much your playstyle can change or even improve by changing your keyboard’s positioning.

The mechanical gaming keyboard industry has been evolving throughout the years. Many brands that previously relied on Cherry MX switches have since employed other keyboard switches or have manufactured their own designs. HyperX is the latest brand to join the custom gaming keyboard switch party.

At present, HyperX offers three in-house developed gaming keyboard switches. They have the Red linear switch, Aqua tactile switch, and Blue clicky switch. These keyboard switches are most notably based on the Cherry MX switches the brand previously used. However, they have been modified to have better gaming performance.

Hyperx’s gaming keyboard switch lineup is still fairly basic. However, they seem to satisfy the needs of their customers pretty well and will likely look to expand their options in the future. In this article, we will be taking a look at Hyperx’s gaming keyboard switch options in more detail.

We will talk about the various specifications of their switches and how they compare to the Cherry MX switches they were based on. This guide aims to help users choose the best HyperX switch for their HyperX gaming keyboard.

Introduction to HyperX Mechanical Switches

HyperX Mechanical Switches

HyperX initially offered gaming mechanical keyboards equipped with Kaihl and Cherry MX switches. However, HyperX later explored the idea of manufacturing their own keyboard switch. Many of their competitors, including Razer and Logitech G, have gone this route.

In 2021, HyperX finally revealed their in-house developed switches to the public. The brand provided three variations: HyperX Red linear switches, HyperX Aqua tactile switches, and HyperX Blue clicky switches. All of which will be discussed in the latter part of this article.

The three current HyperX gaming switches are very similar to the Cherry MX and Kailh switches that they previously used. The new Reds, Aquas, and Blues are direct counterparts of the Cherry MX Red/Kailh Speed Silver linear switches, Blue clicky switches, and Brown tactile switches. However, HyperX has made some improvements to make their in-house switches more appealing to gamers.

HyperX switches are designed to have a longer lifespan compared to the older switches they used. The Cherry MX and Kaihl switches are rated for 50 Million clicks, while the HyperX switches are rated for 80 Million clicks. Another key difference is the total travel distance of these new HyperX switches. For example, the Cherry MX Red has a 45g operating force, 2mm actuation point, and 4mm total travel distance. The HyperX Red switch, on the other hand, has a 45g operating force, 1.8mm actuation point, and 3.8mm total travel distance.

One thing to take note of about HyperX switches is that they are proprietary to HyperX keyboards. Furthermore, HyperX keyboards are not hot-swappable, meaning users will not be able to try these different switches without purchasing an entirely new keyboard.

HyperX Switch Models

HyperX Red

HyperX Red

Specifications:

Operation Style: Linear

Operating Force: 45g

Actuation Point: 1.8 mm

Total Travel Distance: 3.8mm

Life Span: 80 Million clicks

The HyperX Red is the brand’s take on linear switches. In terms of its specs, it has the same actuation force as the Cherry MX red switch that the brand previously used. However, what’s different is that HyperX reduced both the actuation distance and total travel distance by 0.2mm. What this entails is that the HyperX red switches mimic the feel of traditional Cherry MX Reds but have a faster response time.

HyperX’s implementation of the red switches is perfect for gamers who are looking for the fastest performing switch in HyperX’s gaming keyboard switch lineup. And while they can still be used for typing, gaming is truly their forte.

HyperX Aqua

HyperX Aqua

Specifications:

Operation Style: Tactile

Operating Force: 45g

Actuation Point: 1.8 mm

Total Travel Distance: 3.8mm

Life Span: 80 Million clicks

The HyperX Aqua switches are very similar to the Cherry MX Brown switches. Unlike with the HyperX Red switches, HyperX did some modifications to the Aqua switches. The actuation force has been reduced from 55g (Cherry MX Brown) to 45g making the HyperX Aqua a lighter feeling switch. Also, the actuation distance and total travel distance have also been reduced to make the Aquas activate faster.

The Aqua switches sit in between the HyperX Blue and Red switches. Like the Blues, they still have a tactile bump which allows the user to identify if the switches are being activated. However, unlike the Blues, there is no clicky sound making the Aquas sound closer to the Reds. Given the characteristic of Aqua switches, they are perfect for both gaming and typing.

HyperX Blue

HyperX Blue

Specifications:

Operation Style: Clicky

Operating Force: 50g

Actuation Point: 1.8 mm

Total Travel Distance: 3.8mm

Life Span: 80 Million clicks

Lastly, we have the HyperX Blue switches. As its name implies, the HyperX Blue is based on the Cherry MX Blue clicky switch. But just like the two other HyperX switches, the HyperX Blues have been modified to respond faster for gaming.

Actuation force has been reduced from 60g to 50g while actuation distance and total travel distance have been reduced. Overall, since they are based on the original Cherry MX Blue switches, they are primarily designed for typing. However, they can still appeal to gamers who love the loud and clicky sound that these switches provide. They will be heavier than both the Reds and the Aquas but they should not feel as fatiguing as the original Cherry MX Blues.

Which Hyperx Switch Do We Recommend?

HyperX Red Linear Switch

Since HyperX gaming keyboards are primarily designed for gaming, recommending the HyperX Red linear switches is pretty much a no-brainer. They will respond the fastest and will allow gamers to input commands without any hindrance. Of course, this will still depend on personal preference since some may still prefer having the control that the HyperX Aquas provide. But overall, these two switches are the ones that we will be recommending.

Can You Mod HyperX Switches?

Like any other MX-style keyboard switch, HyperX gaming switches can be modified. Both the Red and Aqua switches should become smoother when lubed and filmed. However, since HyperX switches are soldered into the PCB, they will be harder to modify. Also, unlike most custom keyboard brands, HyperX does not encourage users to open up their keyboards and modify the various internal components.

Doing so may void the warranty. We recommend leaving these switches alone unless the user is truly unsatisfied with their performance.

Where to Buy HyperX Switches?

Unfortunately, HyperX switches cannot be bought separately. They exclusively come with newer HyperX gaming keyboards. There are also no HyperX key switch testers available, meaning users cannot test these switches beforehand.

The layout of the keyboard determines what functions you will be using daily. Therefore in picking out a keyboard, the format is one of the most important things to consider. This is especially important for those who primarily use their keyboards for gaming, as specific keys are used in certain games.

The 60% keyboard layout has been gaining traction in the gaming community. This layout does not take up much space, allowing a more extensive area for bigger monitors and speakers. Its size allows it to be easily moved or angled however you want. This also results in a shorter distance between keyboard and mouse, possibly reducing strain on your mouse hand and wrist, making it more ergonomic than bigger keyboard layouts.

This article will discuss the pros and cons of a 60% keyboard and whether or not this layout is suitable for gaming. And by the end of this article, our readers should be able to tell if 60% keyboards are a good fit for them.

Some Aspects to Consider in Getting a Gaming Keyboard

For gaming, some aspects of a keyboard have a measurable impact on your gaming, albeit as a disclaimer, some of these aspects have such a tiny influence that most people disregard it entirely.

Keyboard Ergonomics

Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic

The first aspect is keyboard ergonomics, which refers to how ‘natural’ the keyboard feels to you. This could also refer to how natural it is to reach the keys when you want to, whether or not some essential keys are too far away for you to reach without doing finger acrobatics, how the switch feels when you push it, and so on.

This aspect is probably the most significant factor for gaming. You have to get your hands on a board to identify appropriately whether or not a board is a perfect fit since everybody is different.

Key Layout

The next aspect is the keyboard size which is also related to ergonomics, but it is worth mentioning as there is a difference between size and proper key layouts, both being essential factors that should be looked at on their own.

A giant board may require you to keep your mouse hand apart from your resting ‘W-A-S-D’ hand, thus forcing you into a “game stance” that isn’t conducive to flawlessly fluid play. More space is preferable in this sense, but you must also be careful not to sacrifice the keys you need.

Functionality

Last but not least, there is key functionality. As previously stated, if your board lacks any or every button required for the games you play, you have the wrong board. Sixty percent of boards can be great, but if it compromises keys you rely on or makes them difficult to press in-game, you chose a board that is too tiny.

Most often than not, FPS games usually don’t require more than 60% layouts. Such layouts also have programmable buttons for doing complex button press operations in a single click, which may or may not apply to the game you’re playing.

What is a 60% Keyboard?

GK61

A 60% keyboard means that its layout only contains 60% of the keys of a full-sized keyboard. It forgoes the Numpad and the Function key row at the top. It also does not include the navigational cluster on the right, only leaving you with the alphanumeric characters. After full-size and TKL, 60% is perhaps the most common layout.

Perks of Using a 60% Keyboard

The main reason people prefer a 60% keyboard layout is its size. It is compact enough not to take up too much space when you have a limited workspace, making room for your mouse and other attachments.

Increased desk space is a perk to this layout as the functioning of your keyboard plays a significant role in your overall performance. If you put in enough time getting accustomed to this style or learning certain functions to access specific keys, you would be able to reap the benefits of saving space.

One of the benefits of more space is that you are given more freedom to create a more personalized work configuration. It is easy to position at a comfortable angle, reducing wrist and forearm strain. Adjusting the keyboard posture to your comfort will relieve tension on your wrists and shoulders. This is critical since gaming sessions might extend for several hours.

With that, you’re still provided with the necessary keys without compromising your comfortability.

Using 60% Keyboards for Gaming

Draconic Pro K530 White

Some people prefer to use a 60% for gaming, and typically, it is enough for most games. However, since most 60% of keyboards have no arrow keys, you may not be able to play games that specifically use function keys, etc.

FPS gamers benefit more from this layout as it features all the needed keys used for most FPS games. Using the 60% layout with games like Call of Duty, which utilizes the gaming mouse more, allows you to freely and comfortably move your mouse with the increased desk space.

Using 60% Keyboards in MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena)

MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games often use an average of ten (10) keys – most of which belong to the alphanumeric group and some modifiers such as the Alt and Ctrl keys. However, in games such as Blizzard’s most popular game, Defense of the Ancients, now dubbed as DOTA 1, the 60% keyboard may not be enough if you are playing with the key bindings on default since it has some keys are assigned to the Numpad.

Nevertheless, an effective remedy to these problems is to remap the keys to what is included in your 60% keyboard.

Using 60% Keyboards in FPS/Shooting Games

The most popular shooting games of all time, such as Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensivemostly use alphanumeric keys such as the W, A, S, D, and other keybindings for utilities and gun switching. Based on experience, it is pretty rare that some game developers require keys other than alphanumerics. Point in case, a 60% keyboard is enough if you play games in this genre.

Using 60% Keyboards in MMORPGs & RPGs

On the other hand, MMORPG and RPGs almost always require you a lot of keys to play with due to the number of skill commands that are binding to your keyboard. Still, most games only need alphanumeric keys and some modifiers for menu shortcuts.

However, some games, such as the popular Genshin Impact, require keys such as Function keys, navigational arrow keys, and sometimes, the Numpad. This is crucial given that remapping the keys as a solution may be impossible since there are already many keys bound at default on the alphanumeric keys. This being the case, you may experience the 60% keyboard’s shortcomings regarding its limited number of keys if you play games such as MMORPGs or RPGs that require a lot of key bindings.

Using 60% Keyboards in Other Genres

In terms of other genres, gamers prefer to do key binds instead for specific functions rather than getting a whole keyboard as reaching for keys is not as ergonomic, and there are tradeoffs like having less space for your mousepad.

Point in case, you will always have the option to remap the keys to those available in your 60% keyboard if the game you are playing, such as Gamehouse’s Tap a Jam, has key controls outside the 60% form factor at default.

60% Keyboards Recommended for Gaming

Royal Kludge 61 (RK61)

Royal Kludge RK61

Hot-swappable switches

Detachable Type-C cable

RGB/Single Color Backlighting

Wireless Bluetooth Capability

Software for Key Remapping

Royal Kludge is quite popular for producing low-priced entry-level keyboards. It is jam-packed with premium features such as Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity and is hot-swappable. For its asking price, you will surely get your money’s worth if you are looking for an entry-level or budget 60% mechanical keyboard.

Anne Pro 2

Hot-swappable switches

Detachable Type-C cable

Custom RGB/Single Color Backlighting

Wireless Bluetooth Capability

Tab/Double Magic FN key

The Anne Pro 2 is quite similar to the RK61 but is more expensive and has a better build quality. Its price is justified through the added software support wherein you can program up to sixteen (16) macros, customize its RGB backlighting, and remap its keys at ease. You are also given more switch options on purchase. The only thing worth noting about this keyboard is that it is not hot-swappable. But otherwise, the Anne Pro 2 is a great midrange pre-built 60% keyboard.

Gamakay 61

Gamakay K61

Full translucent glazed panel, PMMA plexiglass material, CNC cutting

Ergonomically designed

Hot-swappable switches

Detachable Type-C cable

Custom RGB/Single Color Backlighting

Wireless Bluetooth Capability

Software for Key Remapping

Talk about some RGB Goodness! If you are a fan of what other reviewers would call “rainbow barf,” this keyboard is probably the best for you. The Gamakay 61 features a full-translucent case that maximizes its RGB Backlighting. Aside from being a functional hot-swappable keyboard, the keyboard can be your light show on a budget if you are into that.

Conclusion

In summary, yes, 60% keyboards are perfect for gaming. They have all the necessary keys for most game genres and have been the go-to for competitive and professional gamers. Their small size allows for more desk space and better portability. They are easy to take to LAN events, internet cafes, or different PC setups.

Of course, 60% keyboards will not be for everyone. Gamers who use their keyboards for other tasks will likely find the 60% keyboards to be too small.

For those kinds of users, we urge you to check out 65% keyboards and 75% keyboards. But for gamers who will strictly use their keyboards for gaming, 60% keyboards are highly recommended.

The Alice Layout has risen in popularity due to the designer Yuk Tsi providing free files for an acrylic version of the Alice available online. Yuk Tsi releasing the design has allowed several designers to adapt and create their cases with this layout, becoming increasingly popular.

Alice Keyboards claims to be better than standard layouts as it requires users to position their hands and wrists in a tilting manner to reduce muscle strain. Thus, Alice Keyboards are great for long hours of gaming, providing a more comfortable gaming experience.

However, these layout types are new to most people and require some adaptation process. Adjusting periods will vary depending on the user and the game they play, as Alice keyboards may not be accommodating to all computer games. This article aims to give an overview of Alice keyboards in gaming, especially the positive and negative effects on gamers. This article will also discuss different types of online games and how Alice keyboards work best for them.

What is an ALICE Keyboard?

Gerald65 Alice Keyboard (Image Credit: Zion Studios)

Developers made the Alice or “Arisu” keyboard to accommodate users that prioritize ergonomics and comfort. Compared to a standard keyboard, it has a space that divides the board into two halves, with the keys stretching outward in a wingspan-shaped pattern.

The problem is that a keyboard that works for one person may not work for another. We are all varied in shape and have distinct typing methods, typing postures, and issues. As a result, while the Alice layout may be ideal for certain people, it may not be suitable for you.

In an Alice layout, the keys are slanted, aiming to accommodate a more relaxed position. This layout type claims to be “ergonomic,” requiring users to arrange their hands and wrists to reduce muscle strain.

Some keyboard enthusiasts swear by Alice-style keyboards, while others say they have trouble adapting to the unique layout. The typing experience, while it stands out with its unique design, is not suitable for all users. Regardless, learning more about the Alice Keyboard can assist users in determining whether they regard this ergonomic arrangement as something worth trying.

Regardless, Alice layout keyboards still let users rotate the wrist outward, solving the problem of regular keyboards forcing a user’s hands in an unnatural position. This layout is exclusive to mechanical keyboards and is not available for membrane keyboards. Alice layouts either have a stacked acrylic case or an aluminum case made to fit the format. Lastly, Alice keyboards usually only fall in the 65% and 75% form factor, which is a disadvantage for those who prefer smaller or bigger-sized keyboards.

Perks of Using an ALICE Keyboard

Let’s users position their hands more naturally compared to regular keyboards.

Lessen hand muscle strain and fatigue.

It lets you angle your hand inwards when you put it narrower than your shoulder width for a more comfortable position.

Intended for people who use their keyboards for an extended period.

It gives you a unique keyboard experience.

Alice keyboards are visually appealing.

Downsides of Using an ALICE Keyboard

You need a period of adjustment for the layout.

Mostly available on group buys or aftermarkets that are more expensive than the selling price.

Not all keycap sets accommodate the layout, especially the spacebar set.

Limited form factors and are usually only 65% or 75% in size.

Using an ALICE keyboard for Gaming

Alice Keyboards are recommended for gaming as it allows gamers to lessen hand strain even after hours of playing. As gamers tend to use keyboards every day for an extended period, Alice keyboards let their hands be more comfortable and natural than prevalent form factors.

Gamers may have difficulty adjusting to the layout as most gamers touch type and are already used to formats such as ANSI. However, some players usually prefer their keyboards tilted while gaming; thus, they may have a shorter adjusting period.

Although Alice layouts are not as compact as 60% keyboards, it is still a smaller form factor than TKL and full-sized boards. However, the size of an Alice Keyboard may be an issue for those who use 60% sized keyboards for larger mouse space.

These gamers’ standard keys are WASD, yet some may remap their keys and prefer ESDF as it has a more natural position. Gladly, most game software allows easy remapping of keys through their settings.

ALICE Keyboards in MOBAs

YMDK Wings

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games are usually played by two teams with five players each. The main goal for each team is to destroy the monument in the center of their opponent’s base. Players will try their hardest to amass gold by defeating minions, while opponents will do the same.

MOBA games heavily rely on QWER keys for skills and number keys for frequently used items. Thus, MOBA players don’t need much time adjusting as needed keys for MOBA games are all available in the Alice layout.

ALICE Keyboards in FPS Games

FPS is a very competitive genre that takes a lot of skill. Games such as CS: GO, and Valorant will heavily rely on the type of mouse being used. However, the type of keyboard being used also plays a part in the whole experience.

As mentioned earlier, a lot of gamers tilt their keyboards while playing FPS titles. Given how the keys of Alice keyboards are naturally titled, gamers should have no trouble adjusting to Alice keyboards. All the required keys for these games are present, meaning little to no adjustment period is required.

The only thing that gamers should take note of is the size of the Alice keyboard they are using. For FPS, smaller Alice keyboards are preferred to maximize the space available for their mouse.

ALICE Keyboards in MMORPGs & RPGs

Role-playing video game (RPG) is an electronic game type where players advance through a story mission and multiple side quests, gaining experience that improves various traits and skills for their character or party of characters. On the other hand, massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) mixes role-playing games with multiplayer online gaming world gameplay features.

MMORPG and RPG games heavily rely on the function row keys or the number keys assigned to character skills, located in the top part of the keyboard for a smoother gaming experience.

Some players utilize the function row keys to assign more skills which can be a problem for Alice layout boards as it usually only accommodates the number row. However, RPG and MMORPG players also use alphanumeric keys for skills. You can remap each key control according to your preferences as a remedy to the ALICE keyboard’s lack of keys depending on the game you are playing.

ALICE Keyboards vs. Other Keyboards for Gaming

Axol Studio Yeti Alice Mechanical Keyboard Kit

Gamers usually choose their keyboard’s form factors depending on the keys required in the games they play. For example, an FPS game and an MMORPG game have different go-to keys and keybinds.

Alice Keyboards have evolved and mainly offer different form factors like 60%, 65%, 75%, and even 50%. Comparing the same size Alice keyboard to standard keyboards, the latter has a better gaming experience as it lessens the user’s hand strain.

The only advantage of a standard keyboard is the adjusting period Alice keyboards require since the keys are tilted and divided into two. This will prevent users from practicing touch typing if they’re new to ALICE but can be developed over time.

However, consider that gaming with an ALICE keyboard is not generally good and is hugely subject to your preferences. Users report that gaming with an ALICE requires some remapping, especially in the W, A, S, and D keys, given that hand positioning on these keys is quite weird if you are gaming for a long time. On the other hand, others are fine with the ALICE design for gaming.

Remedy to the ALICE Keyboard’s Lack of Keys

Since the ALICE lacks some keys that a full-size keyboard has, the manufacturers have allowed most ALICE PCBs to be easily remappable in different software like VIA and QMK. Game developers have also provided setting features that let gamers remap their keys directly in the game.

However, the Alice layout cannot accommodate users that heavily rely on full-sized keyboards or function row keys as the layout still does not have that feature. Gamers may still opt for an extra number pad if needed, but that will double the cost and will take up more desk space.

It is also programmable via Tmk firmware for better customization. The Ergo board also comes with an aluminum top and bottom case and a bottom weight for the premium feel. The downside of this board is that it does not support LED and only has a caps lock light support, which may be frowned upon by gamers who love RGB.

Conclusion: Are ALICE Keyboards Good for Gaming?

Despite the many benefits of Alice keyboards, they will not be able to satisfy the needs of all types of gamers. Some gamers may not be comfortable with the adjustment period associated with learning Alice keyboards, while others may find these keyboards to be too small for their needs. For those types of gamers, a more traditional keyboard layout is recommended.

However, for those who want to try something new and are interested in the health benefits that Alice keyboards provide, these keyboards are an instant recommendation. Most Alice keyboards have adequate keys for the vast majority of games. They are also pretty customizable to meet the needs of most gamers. Just remember to pick an Alice keyboard that has the right size and right keys for the games you play.

Anyone who has tried to search for the most affordable mechanical keyboard has surely heard of Gigaware. They have been in the mechanical keyboard scene for a very long time and have long been giving budget-priced alternatives to popular gaming keyboard brands.

Gigaware is an OEM computer accessories manufacturer best known for creating budget gaming keyboards. They were known for introducing low-priced RGB backlit mechanical keyboards and entry-level PBT keycaps. Despite not being popular in the keyboard enthusiast market, they are still considered a good option thanks to their low asking price.

The brand originally launched their keyboards in response to the rising popularity of gaming mechanical keyboards. However, the market has since changed and has now moved towards enthusiast-grade custom keyboards. Of course, this begs the question. Are Gigaware keyboards still relevant? If so, who are their keyboards for?

In this article, we will be answering all of these questions. We will dwell deeper into the brand’s roots and product lineup. And ultimately, we will assess whether or not Gigaware’s keyboards are worth purchasing.

More About the Brand

Technically speaking, Gigaware is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The company primarily sells products for other companies to rebrand. Thus, many readers may potentially spot similar-looking products with different branding.

In addition, Gigaware is not actively promoting their brand. While they do have some presence on Facebook and other social media outlets, their marketing isn’t as aggressive as other gaming brands.

Lastly, Gigaware seems to focus solely on the budget-priced computer peripherals market. They are not actively developing groundbreaking or innovative products that will blow the rest of the competition away. Instead, they focus on releasing basic computer peripherals that are good enough for budget-conscious individuals or small businesses such as internet cafes.

Keyboard Lineup

With everything out of the way, we now discuss Gigaware’s keyboards. Gigaware’s keyboard product line is extensive compared to other entry-level keyboard brands. What this entails is that keyboard enthusiasts on a tight budget will still be able to find something that fits their aesthetic preferences and needs.

Gigaware offers different keyboard sizes, including full-size, TKL, and 60%. In addition, Gigaware keyboards are known for integrating popular gaming keyboard features such as RGB and wireless connectivity.

The brand is also known to be one of the first to offer affordable PBT keycaps. They now also currently offer hot-swappable keyboards, making their products a good entry point for those who cannot fully commit to a full-blown custom keyboard.

Due to how many products Gigaware offers, we cannot go through all of the brand’s offerings. Instead, we have selected popular products and keyboards that represent the best value that Gigaware has to offer.

Gigaware KG1 Mnemonix

Highlights

TKL/Full-sized Mechanical keyboard

Hot-swappable

Available in Outemu Blue, Red, or Black Switches

RGB backlighting

Comes with a “Shroud” that acts as a top case for protection to the keyboard

The KG1 Mnemonix is Gigaware’s latest offering. It employs many design elements found in older Gigaware keyboards while also introducing newer features that are becoming highly sought out in the keyboard community.

Like most Gigaware keyboards, the KG1 is available in both a TKL and full-size form factor. It also features many familiar design elements such as RGB and an all-black color scheme.

The most notable addition here is the presence of hot-swappable switches. While it is still limited since it is only compatible with Outemu switches, it is still a step in the right direction. Outemu has a number of different offerings that will allow users to try out different keyboard switch types. In addition, Outemu is the manufacturer of the highly successful Gazzew switches, meaning it is still possible to use higher-end keyboard switches.

Aside from having hot-swappable switches, another quirk that the KG1 has is the added “shroud” that acts as a top case for the keyboard. Lastly, the KG1 is available in both a TKL and full-sized form factor. It can also be bought with either Outemu Blue, Red, or Black switches preinstalled. Overall, given that it has hot-swappable switches, the KG1 Mnemonix is currently the brand’s most enticing option.

Gigaware STK61

Gigaware STK61

60% Form Factor

Bluetooth 5.0 Wireless/Wired Mode

Doubleshot Keycaps

N-Key Rollover (NKRO)

Available in Blue and Red Switches

RGB backlighting

The Gigaware STK61 is the brand’s 60% keyboard offering. It is marketed towards users looking for a small form factor keyboard that takes up less desk space or can be used in a portable setting. It also seems to be a direct response to the growing popularity of budget 60% keyboards, as seen with keyboards such as the Royal Kludge RK61 and Epomaker GK61.

Aside from its small size, the STK61 also features Bluetooth 5.o wireless connectivity, and wired connectivity. Its various connection options allow users to choose how they want to use the SKT61.

Unfortunately, unlike most of Gigaware’s competitors, the STK61 does not feature hot-swappable switches. Also, the switches that it does come with are unbranded/generic blue or red switches. Overall, unlike the GK1 Mnemomix, the STK61 is more of a basic keyboard for regular consumers rather an enthusiast keyboard that can be customized.

One thing to note is that Ajazz seems to be selling the same keyboard. But again, this should not come as a surprise since Gigaware is an OEM company.

Gigaware K26

Gigaware K26

Highlights

Full-sized Pre-built Mechanical Keyboard

Non-hot-swappable

RGB Backlighting

Outemu Blue switch

Wired Connectivity

Non-detachable wrist rest.

The Gigaware K26 is one of the brand’s oldest and most well-known offerings. It sports a traditional full-size layout that is on the bulkier side, especially with its included plastic wrist rest.

The K26 was originally released as a budget alternative to popular gaming keyboard brands such as Razer and Corsair. The big appeal of this keyboard was its RGB backlit keys which was a big deal back in the day. The backlighting isn’t as vibrant as higher-end keyboards, and it does not feature per-key RGB lighting.

Lighting and overall software customization were also missing. However, the K26 was considerably more affordable than big-name gaming brands.

Also, the Gigaware K26 is only available with Outemu Blue switches. These clicky switches were quite popular at the time of its launch but have since fallen out of favor compared to other mechanical keyboard switches.

Overall, the Gigaware K26 is still a good option for budget-conscious gamers. However, its overall design aesthetic and key switch offerings are considered outdated in today’s mechanical keyboard market.

Gigaware K28

Gigaware K28

Highlights

TKL Mechanical Keyboard

Non-hot-swappable

RGB Backlighting

Outemu Blue switch

Wired Connectivity

Available in white and black version

The Gigaware K28 is basically a more compact TKL version of the Gigaware K26. The only significant change here is that it does not include a Numpad. This keyboard was released to follow suit with the trend of releasing TKL keyboards that big-name gaming brands were introducing.

The K28 pretty much follows most of the design elements and features of the K26. It has Outemu Blue switches, wired connectivity, and pretty much basic functionality. It also does not include software for in-depth customization. Again, the K28 is still a good keyboard for its price but not the most enticing option in Gigaware’s keyboard offering.

Why Buy Gigaware Keyboards

Gigaware KG1

As we have discussed earlier, Gigaware is not the most premium brand. They are also not the most innovative brand. However, what makes Gigaware a brand worth considering is the fact that their keyboards are useable despite the low asking price.

Having features such as Bluetooth and Outemu hot-swap switches makes their keyboards attractive to budget-conscious consumers or to those who are simply not interested in shelling out a lot of cash just for a keyboard. Also, having many options to choose from allows users to select what keyboard size and features they want.

In addition, Gigaware can be a perfect gateway towards more premium keyboards. They allow users to test the waters to see if they will like mechanical keyboards or if they will like a certain type of keyboard switch. Gigaware’s keyboards can also be a perfect platform for anyone to practice keyboard modding.

And lastly, Gigaware keyboards are perfect for those who want to upgrade the keyboards of their office spaces or internet cafes. After all, Gigaware’s mechanical keyboards will certainly be better than a lot of typical membrane keyboards that these facilities use.

Why Look for Alternatives?

Of course, Gigaware keyboards are certainly not for keyboard enthusiasts. They lack a lot of features that the keyboard community gravitates toward. These include customizability both inside and outside the keyboard. Instead, as we have already established earlier, they are meant for consumers with a tight budget or casual users who are not into keyboards.

For those looking for more customizable options, there are plenty of alternatives both in the budget and high-end market. These include brands such as Royal Kludge, Epomaker, Skyloong, KPRepublic, KBDFans, and many more. All of these companies have curated products that are specifically targeted towards the keyboard enthusiast market.

Where to Buy Gigaware Keyboards?

Gigaware keyboards can be found in a number of different places. They are predominantly found in mainstream online stores such as Amazon and Aliexpress. However, as mentioned earlier, buyers will certainly find Gigaware products rebranded with other brand names.

Gigaware Keyboard Warranty

Gigaware does not explicitly state their warranty policy. So ultimately, what this means is that it will depend on the dealer of their keyboards. For more information, we recommend talking to your local Gigaware keyboard dealer.

EVGA is easily one of the most recognizable brands in the PC parts industry. They are well-known for producing high-quality graphics cards in partnership with NVIDIA, motherboards, power supplies, CPU coolers, etc. Given their massive success, it only makes sense for the brand to further expand their offerings with gaming mice and keyboards.

In terms of mechanical gaming keyboards, EVGA’s current product lineup is not as extensive as their competitors. However, even with just three keyboards, EVGA is already challenging more established brands such as Razer and Corsair. Their gaming keyboards show that they know what gamers and keyboard enthusiasts want and are willing to adjust their designs accordingly.

In addition, EVGA is showing that they are truly a veteran player in the PC parts industry. Their keyboards have many appealing design elements. And most importantly, the warranty of their keyboards shows just how confident they are with their products.

In today’s brand review, we will be taking a deep dive into EVGA’s gaming mechanical keyboard product lineup. And ultimately, we will help gamers decide if EVGA is a brand they should go with for their mechanical keyboard needs.

More About the Brand

In essence, EVGA is one of those top leading tech brands that decided to invest in keyboard-making. The brand originates from North America and is partnered with NVIDIA for its graphics cards. It has existed since the early 2000s but has only decided to create its keyboard division.

EVGA is a famous brand in its forte because of its unique approach to its target market. The brand has created a community for their patrons to showcase their respective PC builds, associates programs, and membership opportunities which entitle you to several discounts and first releases, effectively going away with the burden of falling in line to buy their products.

EVGA Keyboard Line Up

At present, EVGA only offers three (3) full-size mechanical keyboards with all the basic features you need in a regular mechanical keyboard, such as RGB, dedicated media keys, and more. For their hot-swappable keyboard, the Z15, EVGA also allows you to make a separate purchase of Kailh mechanical switches. Without further ado, here is EVGA’s mechanical gaming keyboard lineup.

EVGA Z15

EVGA Z15

Z15 Highlights

Full-sized Hot-swappable mechanical keyboard

Kailh Mechanical Switches of your choice

Dedicated Media Controls

Per-Key RGB backlighting

The EVGA Z15 is currently the brand’s most compelling offering. It features a full-sized layout making it perfect for both gaming and work-related tasks, dedicated media keys, per-key RGB backlighting, and most importantly, 3-pin hot-swappable switches. Of course, the standout feature here is its hot-swappable Kailh switches.

By default, the Z15 comes with either clicky Kailh Bronze switches or Linear Kailh Speed Silver switches. Right out of the box, both options are already high-quality switches. However, users can further customize their keyboards by replacing the stock Kailh switches with the upgrade kits sold by EVGA or by purchasing switches from third-party manufacturers.

The only downside here is the Z15’s 3-pin switch design. By default, this keyboard will not be compatible with many of the premium 5-pin switches offered by brands such as Gateron and Novelkeys. Users can snip the two extra feet, but that is not recommended since it is an irreversible mod.

Outside of its customizable switches, the other features of the EVGA Z15 feel standard. Gamers coming from other gaming keyboard brands will still feel right at home with the Z15 with its standard layout, configurable macros, and dedicated media keys/shortcuts.

In addition, the Z15 is no slouch when it comes to performance, as EVGA is very proud of the low latency performance of the Z15. Lastly, the EVGA Z15’s design language is very similar to the brand’s other offerings. There is a pronounced logo on top, and the keyboard is overall a bit on the bulkier side. Overall, the Z15 is great for those looking for a feature-packed gaming keyboard with customizable mechanical switches.

EVGA Z20

EVGA Z20 RGB Optical Mechanical Keyboard

Z20 Highlights

Full-sized Pre-Built Optical-Mechanical Keyboard

Optical Clicky Mechanical Switches with low travel distance

Dedicated Media Controls

“Time of Flight” Sensor

Per-Key RGB Backlighting and RGB Light Bar on the sides

4000 Hz Polling Rate

The EVGA Z20 is considered to be an upgrade to the Z15. Most features and design elements are very similar to the Z15. The main difference is that the Z20 features optical-mechanical switches instead of the traditional 3-pin mechanical switches found on the Z15.

Optical keyboard switches have many perks over their standard mechanical counterparts. They are considerably faster and are not prone to wear and tear due to the absence of metal-to-metal contact. The main downside that they have is the lack of variety.

Unlike standard mechanical keyboard switches, there are only a few brands that produce optical keyboard switches. Some notable brands, such as Razer, have adopted this technology. But aside from these brands, optical keyboards haven’t truly taken off.

The lack of variety is perfectly displayed in the Z20. Users will only have access to clicky and linear optical switches out of the box. And since this keyboard is not hot-swappable, there are no other options available.

Aside from its switches, some other notable features of the EVGA Z20 include the addition of a dedicated macropad, 4000 Hz polling rate, and a time of flight sensor. The time of flight sensor detects key movement, and it can trigger your PC to wake up or sleep depending on your activity.

Overall, the EVGA Z20 offers some unique features not found in competing gaming keyboards but also loses the customizability that the Z15 has. It is recommended for those who prioritize performance and features over keyboard switch variety and customizability.

EVGA Z12

EVGA Z12

Z12 Highlights

Full-sized Mechanical Keyboard

Detachable Magnetic Palm Rest

Membrane Key switches but compatible with Cherry MX Style Keycaps

Added Macro Keys and Dedicated Media Controls

Per-key RGB Backlighting

The EVGA Z12 is the little brother of the Z15. It aims to offer features found on the more premium Z15 at a much lower asking price. Of course, its budget price point means that it has to cut some corners.

In terms of design, the Z12 pretty much shares the same design elements, such as the RGB backlit keys, dedicated macropad, magnetic wrist rest, and the large EVGA branding found on top of the keyboard. What’s different here is that the Z12 features membrane keys instead of the higher-quality mechanical keyboard keys found on the Z15. Essentially, what this entails is that the Z12 will have a mushier feel and an overall shorter lifespan compared to its more expensive counterparts.

In addition, the Z12 only features zone RGB backlighting instead of per-key RGB backlighting. The Z12 clearly has many limitations in terms of customizability. However, it still has some saving graces.

The Z12 still features MX-style switches, meaning it is compatible with third-party keycaps. In addition, it has dedicated macro keys which can be used for both work applications and games. Lastly, the Z12 is IP32 Certified Spill-Resistant, meaning it may be able to withstand some accidental spills that you may encounter upon usage. Overall, while not the most premium or feature-packed keyboard, the EVGA Z12 is still a very good option for gamers on a tight budget.

What Makes EVGA a Good Brand?

While gaming keyboards are certainly not EVGA’s field of expertise, their gaming keyboard offering is still very solid. It has all the right features that gamers are looking for. Plus, their keyboards are reliable and are not known to fall during regular use. And to further sweeten the deal, EVGA offers a three-year warranty giving their buyers confidence in their products.

Also, despite currently having a limited number of keyboard-related products, there is something for everyone here. The EVGA Z15 is perfect for those who want to tinker with their keyboards but do not want to fully commit to a custom keyboard. The Z20, on the other hand, is perfect for those who simply want raw performance and features. And lastly, the Z12 appeals to those looking for a budget-priced keyboard.

Overall, EVGA shows that they are an experienced manufacturer that knows how to do business in the computer parts industry. While there are many other manufacturers in the market, users can feel more confident by buying a product from an established brand.

Why Look for Alternatives?

Unfortunately, EVGA still has a lot of catching up to do in the mechanical keyboard market. These days, mechanical keyboards are moving away from the design trends and elements found on EVGA gaming keyboards. Most gamers and keyboard enthusiasts these days want custom keyboard like features such as a small form factor, rotary encoders/knobs, 5-pin hot-swappable switches, aluminum/high-quality keyboard cases, gasket mount design/bouncy typing experience, and many more.

Of course, EVGA is not the only one falling behind these keyboard trends. However, if EVGA wants to improve their standing in the market, they can certainly learn from brands that are accepting these changes, such as Glorious and Keychron. EVGA is so close with their hot-swappable Z15. So as long as EVGA keeps on innovating, they will certainly be a big name brand in the mechanical keyboard market.

Alternatively, if you are in the market for custom keyboards, we recommend checking out our brand reviews on KBDFans, Cannonkeys, and Novelkeys.

Which EVGA Keyboard To Buy?

For those interested in EVGA’s gaming keyboards, we highly recommend the EVGA Z15. This keyboard is the most customizable out of EVGA’s two mechanical keyboards, given that it has hot-swappable switches. And apart from the dedicated macro keys found on the Z20, the two keyboards are pretty much identical, meaning you are not losing any meaningful functionality with the Z15.

Where to Buy EVGA Keyboards?

EVGA gaming keyboards can be directly purchased from the EVGA’s official website. Alternatively, their keyboards can also be purchased from various retailers and online stores such as Amazon.

Many well-known computer brands/manufacturers have attempted to make high-quality gaming keyboards for professional Esports players, casual gamers, and keyboard enthusiasts. However, only a few brands have been able to stand out from this incredibly crowded market. Most brands simply stamp their name on poorly designed keyboards, which has left a bad impression on many gamers.

Alienware is best known as a manufacturer of high-end gaming computer systems under Dell. But aside from high-end PCs and laptops, the brand also produces high-quality gaming keyboards/gaming peripherals. Most of their keyboards have been well received by the gaming community thanks to their good feature set and reliability.

One brand that has managed to translate their success in the PC gaming world to the gaming peripherals market is Alienware. Many gamers and computer enthusiasts will immediately recognize this brand as one of the leading gaming PC and laptop manufacturers.

Their products can pretty much be seen in any computer store. In addition, their brand is prominent in the Esports scene since they sponsor a lot of professional gaming organizations and Esports events.

Here, we will look into Alienware as a manufacturer of gaming keyboards and how they fare with their competitors. Likewise, this article will serve as a guide for what to expect if you are looking to buy one of their keyboards.

More About the Brand

Alienware is under Dell Technologies, a popular tech giant with a considerable market share in different tech industries. The move to manufacture gaming peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and headphones way back in the earlier 2000s is rather an expected one, given that most of their competition has likewise adopted the same.

The brand is trendy for its desktop and laptop computers with unconventional “futuristic designs.” A similar design concept can also be observed with their gaming peripherals bearing the same Alienware logo.

What makes Alienware a brand different from other gaming brands is its vast presence in the E-sports industry. If you have been a fan of Team Liquid, whether, in Dota 2, Counter-Strike, Valorant, or any E-sports title, you should know that both have been in collaboration to define the future of E-sports.

Keyboard Lineup

Before we hop into their keyboards, know that Alienware’s product line is relatively small and is wholly composed of full-sized keyboards at present. While this may be the case, no keyboard is objectively inferior to each other when it comes to doing the job it was primarily meant to do.

Alienware is a manufacturer of both gaming membrane and mechanical keyboards. Their products are priced competitively compared to the costs of other tech giants such as Razer’s, Steelseries, Corsair, and the like. However, if you compare their price-to-performance value to those brands that do not put a premium on their names and logos stamped on their products, the former appears to be a questionable purchase.

In another perspective, their keyboards may be worth considering if you are a devoted fan of Alienware. Again, to each of his own. With that out of the way, here are some of the keyboards they currently offer.

Alienware AW410K

Alienware AW410K

AW401K Highlights

Full-Sized Form Factor Mechanical Keyboard

Cherry MX Mechanical Switches

Per-Key RGB Backlighting

Alienware’s keyboards are pretty straightforward, meaning aside from it being obviously a gaming peripheral right of the bat, it does not have any added accents or keys unique to the keyboard itself. The AW410K is no exception.

First on the list is a keyboard that sports your regular Cherry MX mechanical switches covered with Black backlit keycaps. Should you not vibe with the all-black design, you have a white version as an alternate.

Alienware AW510K – Low Profile

What sets apart the AW510K from the AW410K is the height of its keycaps. The AW510K is equipped with low-profile keycaps. Aside from that, this is the only keyboard from the brand that sports a volume knob. Even though it is not programmable, a dedicated media key will surely be convenient for some people.

The AW768 is one of the first released keyboards by Alienware. Again, we can see here the straightforward design implemented in its most recent releases. There is nothing new, except for the RGB Underglow provided by an LED strip on its bottom. Should you be interested in this keyboard, note that this has two versions – one which is equipped with Cherry MX Brown switches, and the other one with Kaihl Browns.

This is basically the AW768 with no Per-key RGB Backlighting. Regarding its form factor and design, the AW568 still carries the same as the AW 768. The only thing different is that the AW568 is only available in Kailh Brown switches, unlike where you can get it with Cherry MX Brown.

What Makes Alienware a Good Brand?

Alienware successfully manufactured market-standard gaming keyboards that go in perfect harmony with the ecosystem they have created. Likewise, having working tech support to attend to the issues of your Alienware gears is quite reassuring, given the price you are paying.

Consider also that the brand considers those fans of theirs who are tight on their budget by giving them the option to purchase gaming membrane keyboards that relatively cost less than their mechanical ones. If you are also the type of person who is pretty skeptical about their finances, the brand got you covered through their discounts if you buy in cash or bundles with their gaming mice.

Why Look For Alternatives?

Alienware caters to a group of customers that vibe with the gamer aesthetic. In other words, the design concept of their keyboards screams that its owner is a gamer. Others may like it, but surely a number does not.

Point in case if you are looking for keyboards with discreet and minimalistic designs, then it is recommended that you look somewhere else. In this light, as the brand only offers full-sized gaming keyboards, they do not have keyboards with smaller form factors such as 65%, 60%, and the like. Ergo, the brand is an automatic pass if you prefer smaller keyboards.

Lastly, Alienware only offers pre-built gaming keyboards, which do not have hot-swap sockets, meaning you cannot change its key switches should one break or if you want to replace them. If this feature is something that you need, then better look somewhere else.

Which Alienware Keyboard to Buy?

Remember that their keyboards are often bundled with their AW610 gaming mice when deciding what keyboard to buy. In case you are looking for a set, perhaps their bundles are the best way to go.

Regarding what keyboard you should go with, the deciding factor would be its availability. More often than not, Alienware keyboards are only available on mainstream websites such as Amazon. Once in a while, you may pass by it in most online stores, but their newest releases, the AW410K and the AW510K are rarely in-stock. If you are looking for a low-profile mechanical keyboard, definitely go with the AW510K. Otherwise, opt for the AW410K.

Where to Buy Alienware Keyboards?

It is highly recommended that you purchase their keyboards directly from their website. Their products are also available in most mainstream online stores.

Alienware Keyboard Warranty

Alienware offers a 2-year limited warranty for all of its keyboards. Check out Alienware’s official website to learn more.

Pro X / GX Switches

Logitech G Pro X Mechanical Keyboard Switch

GX Switches Specifications

Available in Both Tactile (Brown), Linear (Red), Clicky (Blue) Variant

Pre-travel Distance: 1.9 – 2.00 mm; Total Travel Distance: 4.00 mm

Actuation Force: 50gf to 60 gf

The Pro X switches are switches exclusive to Logitech’s first-ever hot-swappable keyboard: the Logitech G Pro X. Said keyboard is designed to be hot-swappable but only with the different variations of the Pro X switches and Cherry-MX compatible switches.

The three (3) versions of the Pro X switches are distinct in terms of typing sound and feel. The GX Browns serve as a middle ground between the relatively loud clicky sound profile of the GX Blues and the Reds’ discreet and almost silent sound profile. Compared o the Romer G Switches, this is significantly a substantial step-up in design and functionality.

The GX Blue clicky has an audible click with a feedback bump like a tactile feel with a 50g for average force, actuation distance of 2 mm, and a total travel distance of 3.7 mm, whereas the GX Red linear has a quiet and smooth stroke with a 50g for average force, actuation distance of 1.9 mm, and a total travel distance of 4 mm.

As a result, there is greater comfort and a more natural hand position.

Pre-travel Distance: 1.5 mm; Total Travel Distance: 3.2mm

Actuation Force: 45gf to 50 gf

One of Logitech’s earliest mechanical switch releases, the Romer-G switch, is a keyboard switch with metal contacts similar to the Cherry MX switches with the added metal contacts. The Romer G switches have the least variations in Logitech switches, with only two options to choose from.

The Romer-G tactile has a 50g tactile force, 45g for average force, actuation distance of 1.5 mm, and a total travel distance of 3.2 mm. In comparison, the Romer-G linear has a 45g for average force, actuation distance of 1.5 mm, and a total travel distance of 3.2 mm.

The Romer-G attempts to be a different and more superior mechanical switch to the Cherry MX. Some users have experienced their dismay over this mechanical switch based on many reasons, such as its non-compatibility with custom keycap sets, relatively loud sound profile, and a lot more.

Recommended Logitech G Switches for Gaming

Logitech G Pro X Keyboard

Logitech G’s latest offering, the Pro X/GX switches, are arguably the company’s best switches to date. They are a massive improvement over the Romer G switches in terms of typing feel and typing sound. Also, with the number of variants available, users can choose if they want a smooth and fast linear switch, a more controlled tactile switch, or a clicky switch with both tactility and audible feedback.

Alternatively, gamers can also opt for the GL switch. These switches are best suited for those who are used to or prefer the feel of laptop/chiclet keyboards. And like the GX switches, the GL switches are available in three variants, so gamers have plenty of options to choose from.

Lastly, Romer G switches are no longer recommended with how good Logitech G’s other offerings are. They are certainly still useable, especially if you are planning on picking up an older Logitech G mechanical keyboard. But overall, both the GX and GL switches are better than the Romer G in terms of sound and feel.

Recommended Logitech G Switches for Typing

Logitech GX Brown Tactile Switches

The GX Brown switch is recommended for typing as it has a recognizable tactile bump that you can feel with every press. The tactile feedback during actuation provides limited feedback to give confidence and precision in the actuation moment—without being overly loud or distracting. Tactile switches are perfect for competitive and first-person shooter gaming. Alternatively, you may want to try the GL switches if you are comfortable typing with low-profile switches or on your laptop keyboard.

Modding Logitech G Switches

Logitech switches are limited in terms of customizability, even if we are talking about the GX switches. As of now, no one has attempted to implement mods to the GX switches, even with simple mods such as lubing. Note that its unique architecture, while patterned to Cherry MXs, is still a barrier to this effect. Be that as it may, updates as to whether there is a safe way to mod the GX switches will be posted later on, so stay tuned.

The Romer-Gs are also in the same situation. It may be best that you buy a custom mechanical keyboard instead of attempting to lube or disassemble this kind of switch, as such is not covered by your keyboard’s warranty.

Keycap Compatibility of Logitech G Switches

Logitech G915 TKL

Logitech G keyboards equipped with GX switches are compatible with most available keycap sets in the market as they feature the classic MX style stem. The only thing to take note of is the size and profile of the keycaps. Most gaming keyboards, including Logitech G keyboards, have North-Facing switches, so be careful when ordering Cherry profile keycaps.

Older Logitech G that use Romer G switches, on the other hand, can only fit Logitech’s keycaps designed explicitly for that kind of switch. So, unfortunately, these older keyboards are less customizable than newer Logitech G keyboards.

Where to Buy Logitech G Switches?

You cannot buy most Logitech G switches separately from Logitech G keyboards. The only exception is the GX switches which can be purchased as an upgrade kit for the Logitech G Pro X.

Most gamers and keyboard enthusiasts are already familiar with the various colored keyboard switches. Red is mostly designated for liner switches, brown for tactile switches, and blue for clicky switches. However, in the past couple of years, many keyboard manufacturers have been making strides to develop new switches that improve several aspects of a standard keyboard switch, including its feel and durability.

The OmniPoint switch that comes with SteelSeries’ Apex Pro keyboard line-up is a switch that you can configure, per-key, to various actuation points within a reasonably wide range. It is based on the Hall Effect keyboard technology that uses magnets. It promises to bring a more durable and customizable switch to the gaming keyboard market.

In this article, we will be taking a closer look at the SteelSeries Omnipoint switches. We’ll look at how they work, the keyboards that support them, and whether or not they are worth considering.

Brief Background Behind Steelseries

In 2001, Jacob Wolff-Petersen had started a company and named it Soft Trading. However, as time passed, the Soft Trading company began to develop more than computer accessories. Due to this, the company would change its name to the most known name today: SteelSeries.

SteelSeries had grown due to an expanding portfolio and specialties and added partnerships with various other companies within the computer manufacturing lines. As it is now, SteelSeries is a company well-known in the gaming sphere and are famous for a variety of their production lines. These lines include their mice, the Apex headsets, and keyboards.

When the SteelSeries company made the first venture into mechanical keyboards, they had also taken to the Cherry MX Switch, seeing as they had both popularity and a good reputation among the customer base. This allowed SteelSeries to focus on the rest of the keyboard in manufacturing. SteelSeries had stuck with Cherry MX switches even after the patent on the switch design itself had expired and was made public.

However, in recent times SteelSeries had decided to make a point and innovated on keyboard design and released a keyboard that would garner the attention of casual users and enthusiasts alike. A keyboard was made to be customizable so that the user could tweak the actuation force of each key they so pleased—a switch of their very own design.

In 2019, Steelseries had unveiled their new, in-house-made switches. They called it the OmniPoint switch.

The OmniPoint Switch

OmniPoint Switch

The OmniPoint switch had come about due to the current standard of mechanical switches. That standard being; which switch can be the fastest, easiest to actuate? This, of course, heavily leans on the preferences of a gamer’s perspective, who need rapid and sensitive keys for high-speed gaming.

That said, there is no one size fits all, and many users who do not participate in the gaming sphere often dislike the fast switches due to the near-irritating flaw of hypersensitive switches. Even bumping a key could actuate it, which means a mess of editing for those who type more than game.

And so, enter the OmniPoint switch. The OmniPoint switch’s biggest hook is that each key has a customizable actuation point, and you, the user, can tweak any key to whatever sensitivity you need it to. There is no need to compare switches online and read through a dozen articles when you can adjust the OmniPoint switch to anything you need it to do.

The Mechanism Behind the Switches

The main difference between the OmniPoint and other switches is that there’s no contact made within the switch at any point in time. This is due to the way the switch itself is made. Omni point switches have a magnet at the bottom another magnet at the stem, and when pressed, there is a magnetic flux made for the press to be registered by the computer.

This magnetic flux is known as the Hall effect, and despite everything, Steelseries did not, in fact, invent the technology. In terms of using it in keyboard manufacturing, others had used it first: the Wooting One and Two keyboards made with Flaretech optical switches.

With the SteelSeries OmniPoint switches, you can configure each key to your preference instead of having a set actuation point across the keyboard. That configuration is measured between 0.4 to 3.6 millimeters, allowing for a great range between whatever typing speed or feel you would like.

Compatibility with Hot-swappable Keyboards

One of the main appeals of mechanical keyboards is that the switches are swappable. They’re called hot-swappable when they can be swapped even while in function. It aids in a mechanical keyboard’s longevity and customizability. So, are the OmniPoint switches hot-swappable?

Short answer: not really. The OmniPoint switch, and other switches made with the Hall Effect, are usually sold with their own complete keyboard set instead of sold individually. It is feasible, of course, to remove the switches from their out-of-box keyboard bodies, but it’s not quite advisable to do so.

SteelSeries OmniPoint Switch

Compatibility with Custom Keycaps Sets

At first blush, it does seem like the OmniPoint switch has a similar make and build as the Cherry MX switches. However, as we’ve discussed above, this isn’t the case. But what about the top part? And why would the top part be important? Indeed the switch itself is all that matters.

The top part matters because this is where custom keycaps are placed. Would it be possible if a user wants to make their own or get a new set of keycaps for their OmniPoint switches? They do look like Cherry MX stems.

Simply put, yes, mostly. Custom keycaps do fit on the OmniPoint switches, and most custom caps on the market should fit. However, there’s a catch: the OmniPoint switches are slightly thicker than actual Cherry MX stems. This means that thicker walled keycaps will be stuck when pressed. Therefore, buy your custom caps, but make sure it doesn’t have thick walls.

The Steelseries Apex Pro

Steelseries Apex Pro

When the OmniPoint switch was introduced, they weren’t unveiled as individual switches, and instead, they came with SteelSeries’ innovation on keyboard switch technology. The Apex Pro, and the Apex Pro TKL, had been marketed alongside the traditional red, blue, and brown switches in the older lines.

The keyboard sported per-key RGB backlighting, made of aircraft-grade aluminum and a removable wrist-rest attached to the device via magnetic force. A small screen to the far right, alongside a scroll wheel, allows users to go through various keyboard settings.

As customization is one of the biggest draws of the OmniPoint switch, the keyboard software allows the user to switch between up to 5 different templates. This means that a person can switch between hyper-sensitive keys to keys that must be fully depressed to be registered.

Are Keyboards with OmniPoint Switches Worth Buying?

Steelseries Apex Pro

After a read-through of everything above, it’s not hard to think that the OmniPoint switch and Apex Pro lineup of the best keyboards out there, especially since you can constantly adjust the actuation points whenever you don’t like something. And that’s undoubtedly a popular take on the product. There’s not much drawback in terms of features. If anything, the Apex Pro has more features than even the usual enthusiast may need.

As with any high-end computer peripheral, the real con is the price. Premium products come at premium prices, and so the Apex Pro comes up to nearly 10k at the Philippines’ online stores. To those who don’t have the budget for such, there’s nothing wrong with going for the other, more standard switches and sticking to your budget. The Apex Pro and OmniPoint switches can only get better from here. After all, developers can iterate on the product and improve the design as time passes.

Keyboard manufacturers often include marketing terms such as anti-ghosting in the packaging of their keyboards. Even before mechanical keyboards became popular, anti-ghosting was a big selling point for gaming keyboards. However, many users are still not aware of what it means.

Ghosting occurs when you press multiple keys simultaneously, and your other keys fail to register. Ghosting can be a real problem for gamers who must press multiple keys simultaneously. An anti-Ghosting keyboard function addresses this problem allowing users to press several keys at the same time and have all of the keystrokes register correctly.

To further add to the confusion, the terms anti-ghosting and N-Key Rollover (NKRO) are interchanged often. So the question is, what is Anti-ghosting, and why does it matter?

In this article, we will be aiming to answer that question. We will also be differentiating it with NKRO to help users fully grasp whether Anti-ghosting is a necessary feature or just a marketing gimmick.

Ghosting in Keyboards, Defined

Before we dive into Anti-ghosting, let us first discuss keyboard ghosting. Ghosting in keyboards is a phenomenon that occurs when multiple keys are pressed simultaneously on a keyboard. When ghosting occurs, some of the pressed keys are not registered despite the keys being properly actuated.

This may not seem like an issue for regular users, and after all, most users rarely have to actuate multiple keys simultaneously. However, ghosting can become a big problem for more demanding tasks requiring multiple key combinations.

For instance, gamers constantly press multiple keys at the same time. Some genres, such as fighting games, require precise inputs. If one of the player’s key presses does not register, that could easily make the player lose the round or the entire game. This is the reason why so many gaming keyboards heavily advertise their anti-ghosting features.

Ghost Inputs

Our previous definition is how keyboard manufacturers use the term. However, this definition is incorrect. Ghosting is traditionally referred to as having ghost inputs. In a nutshell, ghost inputs happen when a key actuates without being pressed by the user. For instance, if the user pressed multiple keys at once, an unrelated key that the user did not press can register on the screen.

However, this definition of ghosting is no longer used. This is because computer keyboards have advanced so much that ghost inputs have become rare. So for this article, we will be using the definition that manufacturers use for ghosting.

Causes of Ghosting in Keyboards

There are three possible causes of ghosting in keyboards: the lack of proper hardware to process the signals of the keyboards, dirt/debris underneath the keycaps, and the lack of proper software support for multiple key presses. First off, many keyboard manufacturers choose to use cheaper components inside the PCB. Naturally, the result would have several limitations in the features present and the maximum number of key presses accepted.

Another reason is dirty and debris under the keycaps. This is quite common, especially since many gamers eat snacks in front of their keyboards. And when gunk accumulates underneath the keycaps, the keys become unresponsive.

Lastly, the communication protocol between the hardware and software may limit the maximum number of simultaneous keys reported. However, it is unlikely for this to be the case with modern computer OS.

Keyboard Rollover

Manufacturers have acknowledged that ghosting is an issue for casual and serious keyboard users. Their answer to this problem is to implement rollover in keyboards. Rollover is a hardware function that allows users to accept a specific number of inputs.

Keyboard manufacturers then used the term N-key Rollover to denote how many keys a keyboard can accept. They also introduced the term anti-ghosting, which we will be discussing next.

Defining Anti-Ghosting in Keyboards

Anti-ghosting is very similar to the function of NKRO. It aims to solve keyboard ghosting by allowing multiple user keystrokes to register. The difference between NKRO and Anti-ghosting lies in their implementation.

NKRO is almost exclusively used for mechanical keyboards because of their superior components. And depending on the keyboard model, some mechanical keyboards can even allow full NKRO throughout the entire keyboard.

On the other hand, anti-ghosting is a feature that is not exclusive to mechanical keyboards, and because anti-ghosting is more limited than NKRO, it’s only applied in certain areas, such as the WASD keys. Essentially, this means that keyboard manufacturers guarantee that the essential parts of the keyboard will register their keystrokes without fail.

Is Anti-Ghosting an Important Feature?

Despite not being quite as advanced as full NKRO support, Anti-ghosting is still a crucial feature to have. This is because manufacturers will be able to implement the benefits of NKRO in a wide range of keyboards.

Budget gaming keyboards, for instance, utilize rubber-dome switches. And as we have discussed earlier, switches based on membrane switches will not have the same accuracy or capacity to implement NKRO. But with Anti-ghosting technology, even membrane keyboard-based devices will still work decently.

In addition, Anti-ghosting can also be applied with laptop keyboards/Chiclet keyboards. This is great since not all laptop brands can accommodate mechanical keyboards. It also assures gamers can play competitive matches without resorting to using an external keyboard.
