Despite its massive popularity in today’s gaming culture, the roots of keyboard tilting are very hard to pinpoint. After all, gamers in the early 2000s did not have access to tools to document themselves, and gaming wasn’t exactly popular, nor did it have a good reputation with the general public. But based on the accounts of gamers, gaming news outlets, and esports personalities, tilting keyboards most likely began with the competitive Counter-Strike scene. 

Counter-Strike is one of the oldest Esports titles. The first CS tournament could be traced back as early as 2000. Back then, many peripherals and gaming products we now take for granted did not exist. There were no specialized gaming keyboards and gaming mice. 

There were also no gaming desks or extra-large mousepads made specifically for FPS. And most of all, the tournaments that held these competitions did not have any equipment to cater to the Counter-Strike players at the time. Given these limitations, CS players at the time had to make do with what they had. 

The biggest problem that they had was space. Most keyboards in the 90s and 2000s were large full-sized keyboards that were meant for office work. For other esports titles, such as Starcraft, Dota, and League of Legends, these large keyboards were perfectly usable. However, for Counter-Strike, large keyboards were a big problem since they limited mouse movement. 

Unlike many Esports titles, CS and other tactical shooters require precise mouse movement. And to achieve the highest level of precision, most tactical FPS players prefer using a low sensitivity, which means that they would be making larger mouse movements. Given how large their keyboards were and how limited desk space they had, most CS players resorted to tilting their keyboards to make room for more mouse space. 

Tilting Keyboards in Modern Gaming and Esports

Over the course of the next 20 years. Esports greatly evolved. It is now recognized as a real sport, and professional gamers are now legitimate athletes. Given how much attention Esports has received, gaming equipment has also evolved to accommodate the needs of professional gamers. 

The gaming peripheral that has significantly evolved is the keyboard. Most keyboards used by professional gamers, including gaming keyboards and custom keyboards, have largely shrunken in size. The main reason why many gamers still tilt their keyboards is better ergonomics. As we have mentioned earlier, the primary goal of gamers tilting their keyboards was to maximize available desk space for their mice. However, without them realizing it, they have also made their keyboards more comfortable and better suited for their playstyle. 

The conventional keyboard design and layout, invented in the late 80s and still used by today’s keyboards, is not exactly designed for gaming. It was designed to cater to typists and professionals. IBM’s Model M keyboard design, which most companies later adapted, was based on a typewriter and was meant to help typewriter users transition to computers. 

The traditional keyboard design still worked well for most computer games. But when it came to high-level competitive shooters, the conventional computer keyboard layout had its limitations, especially when it came to comfort. 

But by tilting the keyboard to a certain angle, gamers place their keyboards in a more natural and comfortable position. And over time, this kind of position can help alleviate the problems that can happen when playing in a non-ergonomic position. 

Ergonomic professionals aren’t the only ones claiming the benefits of a tilted/slanted keyboard. Even keyboard designers primarily catering to professionals and typists agree that the standard keyboard layout can be further improved. 

Large companies such as Microsoft have released ergonomic keyboards that feature slanted keys that allow users to position their hands in a more natural position without having to tilt their keyboards. Another benefit of tilting keyboards while gaming is that it caters specifically to the player’s unique playstyle. There are many accomplished FPS players such as Shaiiko and Tarikwho made their full vertically tilted keyboards their trademark. Even well-known players outside of tactical FPS, such as Tfue and Slappie, who primarily play Fortnite, fully tilt their keyboards vertically. 

When asked why they position their keyboards in such a way, it mostly comes down to personal preference. Players like Tfue prefer fully tilting their keyboards to maximize their mouse space, especially for LAN events. Other players fully tilt their keyboards to reach certain keys and develop unique keybindings that would typically be very hard or impossible to do with a traditional horizontally oriented keyboard. 

Another possible benefit of these extreme keyboard tilts is that they can place you into a specific posture which can increase concentration or immersion. While there is no scientific study regarding this matter, it is pretty much similar to the concept of having a battle stance or having a correct posture to maximize your efficiency while studying.

Downsides of Tilting Keyboards When Gaming

The downsides of tilting keyboards will only truly start showing when players start doing extreme tilts that ultimately affect their posture. Gamers with extreme tilts on their keyboards tend to assume a hunchback sitting position. And over time, poor posture will cause long-term damage to your back and possibly other body parts. 

Studies regarding the posture and sitting position of professional gamers and amateur competitive gamers have only started taking off in the last couple of years. But regardless, it is best to be mindful of your posture and sitting position when experimenting with different levels of keyboard tilt. 

Different Keyboard Tilt Positions

Speaking of different levels of keyboard tilts, let us quickly go over some of the commonly used keyboard positions in gaming. These keyboard tilt angles/levels do not have official names, so we will just describe them based on how tilted they are. 

5-degree Keyboard Tilt

The 5-Degree keyboard tilt is arguably the most commonly used keyboard tilt by FPS players. It features a slight tilt and does not deviate too much from the standard fully horizontal keyboard position. Most of the staff here at Keyboardsexpert who play Valorant use this type of tilt. 

In our experience, this keyboard position allows our hands to sit in a more natural position. It also allows us to maximize the available room for wider mouse movements. Most of us use 65% keyboards which can still be inadequate when using a very low mouse sensitivity. 

To avoid hitting the edge of our keyboards, we move our keyboards farther to the left side of our desks. In doing so, our keyboards are moving further from our natural typing position. But when slightly tilting our keyboards, our left hand assumes a more natural position which is more comfortable for longer gaming sessions. 

This type of keyboard tilt naturally came to most of us without even realizing it. We started slightly tiling our keyboards to accommodate our playstyle. We imagine that most players started doing the same thing and are unlikely to be influenced by other gamers. 

45-Degree Keyboard Tilt

The 45-degree keyboard tilt is a more pronounced variation of the 5-degree keyboard tilt. It pretty much has the same benefits as the 5-degree keyboard tilt but allows users to reach certain keys easier. It also allows them to anchor their entire arm to their desk.

Some gamers most likely adopted this position due to having a certain type of chair or desk. Regardless, choosing this type of tilt over the more subtle 5-degree keyboard tilt will come down to personal preference and the type of desk and chair you have. 

Full Vertical Tilt

Lastly, we have the full vertical tilt. This is the type of keyboard tilt that has been adopted by many professional FPS players. As we have mentioned earlier, it has many benefits, such as easily reaching hard-to-reach keys and maximizing desk space. 

However, this type of keyboard tilt will put you into an unconventional sitting position. Feel free to experiment with how well this type of keyboard position works for your playstyle.

Tilting Keyboards in Other Games

The act of tilting keyboards is pretty much exclusive to FPS games. And as we mentioned earlier, the concept of tilting keyboards can be completely foreign to those coming from other Esports titles. So at this point, some may start to wonder, should players of other game genres try tilting their keyboards?

The short answer is, not really. Unlike FPS, other game genres do not need absurd desk space for wide mouse movements. Faker, League of Legends’ most popular and decorated player, is using a very high 3500 DPI. What that tells us is that low DPI is not necessarily needed for these kinds of games, so there is no reason to modify your keyboard position to accommodate more mouse space. 

Sure, you can try to experiment with slight keyboard tilts for a more natural position. But in our experience, our hands do not deviate from our typing position in most competitive titles that aren’t shooters.

Now that we know why professional gamers tilt their keyboards, the question is if you should also start tilting your keyboard while gaming. The answer to that is it depends on your personal preference. 

Each player has a unique playstyle and will approach the game differently. Thus, there should be no rules that will dictate how they hold their keyboards. The mechanical gaming keyboard industry has been evolving throughout the years. Many brands that previously relied on Cherry MX switches have since employed other keyboard switches or have manufactured their own designs. HyperX is the latest brand to join the custom gaming keyboard switch party. 

At present, HyperX offers three in-house developed gaming keyboard switches. They have the Red linear switch, Aqua tactile switch, and Blue clicky switch. These keyboard switches are most notably based on the Cherry MX switches the brand previously used. However, they have been modified to have better gaming performance.

Hyperx’s gaming keyboard switch lineup is still fairly basic. However, they seem to satisfy the needs of their customers pretty well and will likely look to expand their options in the future. In this article, we will be taking a look at Hyperx’s gaming keyboard switch options in more detail.

We will talk about the various specifications of their switches and how they compare to the Cherry MX switches they were based on. This guide aims to help users choose the best HyperX switch for their HyperX gaming keyboard.

Introduction to HyperX Mechanical Switches

HyperX initially offered gaming mechanical keyboards equipped with Kaihl and Cherry MX switches. However, HyperX later explored the idea of manufacturing their own keyboard switch. Many of their competitors, including Razer and Logitech G, have gone this route.

Another key difference is the total travel distance of these new HyperX switches. For example, the Cherry MX Red has a 45g operating force, 2mm actuation point, and 4mm total travel distance. The HyperX Red switch, on the other hand, has a 45g operating force, 1.8mm actuation point, and 3.8mm total travel distance.

One thing to take note of about HyperX switches is that they are proprietary to HyperX keyboards. Furthermore, HyperX keyboards are not hot-swappable, meaning users will not be able to try these different switches without purchasing an entirely new keyboard.

HyperX’s implementation of the red switches is perfect for gamers who are looking for the fastest performing switch in HyperX’s gaming keyboard switch lineup. And while they can still be used for typing, gaming is truly their forte. 

HyperX Aqua

The HyperX Aqua switches are very similar to the Cherry MX Brown switches. Unlike with the HyperX Red switches, HyperX did some modifications to the Aqua switches. The actuation force has been reduced from 55g (Cherry MX Brown) to 45g making the HyperX Aqua a lighter feeling switch. Also, the actuation distance and total travel distance have also been reduced to make the Aquas activate faster. 

The Aqua switches sit in between the HyperX Blue and Red switches. Like the Blues, they still have a tactile bump which allows the user to identify if the switches are being activated. However, unlike the Blues, there is no clicky sound making the Aquas sound closer to the Reds. Given the characteristic of Aqua switches, they are perfect for both gaming and typing.

Actuation force has been reduced from 60g to 50g while actuation distance and total travel distance have been reduced. Overall, since they are based on the original Cherry MX Blue switches, they are primarily designed for typing. However, they can still appeal to gamers who love the loud and clicky sound that these switches provide. They will be heavier than both the Reds and the Aquas but they should not feel as fatiguing as the original Cherry MX Blues.

Which Hyperx Switch Do We Recommend?

Since HyperX gaming keyboards are primarily designed for gaming, recommending the HyperX Red linear switches is pretty much a no-brainer. They will respond the fastest and will allow gamers to input commands without any hindrance. Of course, this will still depend on personal preference since some may still prefer having the control that the HyperX Aquas provide. But overall, these two switches are the ones that we will be recommending.

Can You Mod HyperX Switches?

Like any other MX-style keyboard switch, HyperX gaming switches can be modified. Both the Red and Aqua switches should become smoother when lubed and filmed. However, since HyperX switches are soldered into the PCB, they will be harder to modify. Also, unlike most custom keyboard brands, HyperX does not encourage users to open up their keyboards and modify the various internal components.

Doing so may void the warranty. We recommend leaving these switches alone unless the user is truly unsatisfied with their performance. 

Where to Buy HyperX Switches?

Unfortunately, HyperX switches cannot be bought separately. They exclusively come with newer HyperX gaming keyboards. There are also no HyperX key switch testers available, meaning users cannot test these switches beforehand.

The KG1 Mnemonix is Gigaware’s latest offering. It employs many design elements found in older Gigaware keyboards while also introducing newer features that are becoming highly sought out in the keyboard community. 

Like most Gigaware keyboards, the KG1 is available in both a TKL and full-size form factor. It also features many familiar design elements such as RGB and an all-black color scheme.

The most notable addition here is the presence of hot-swappable switches. While it is still limited since it is only compatible with Outemu switches, it is still a step in the right direction. Outemu has a number of different offerings that will allow users to try out different keyboard switch types. In addition, Outemu is the manufacturer of the highly successful Gazzew switches, meaning it is still possible to use higher-end keyboard switches.

Aside from having hot-swappable switches, another quirk that the KG1 has is the added “shroud” that acts as a top case for the keyboard. Lastly, the KG1 is available in both a TKL and full-sized form factor. It can also be bought with either Outemu Blue, Red, or Black switches preinstalled. Overall, given that it has hot-swappable switches, the KG1 Mnemonix is currently the brand’s most enticing option. 

Gigaware STK61

Aside from its small size, the STK61 also features Bluetooth 5.o wireless connectivity, and wired connectivity. Its various connection options allow users to choose how they want to use the SKT61.

Unfortunately, unlike most of Gigaware’s competitors, the STK61 does not feature hot-swappable switches. Also, the switches that it does come with are unbranded/generic blue or red switches. Overall, unlike the GK1 Mnemomix, the STK61 is more of a basic keyboard for regular consumers rather an enthusiast keyboard that can be customized.

One thing to note is that Ajazz seems to be selling the same keyboard. But again, this should not come as a surprise since Gigaware is an OEM company.

The big appeal of this keyboard was its RGB backlit keys which was a big deal back in the day. The EVGA Z15 is currently the brand’s most compelling offering. It features a full-sized layout making it perfect for both gaming and work-related tasks, dedicated media keys, per-key RGB backlighting, and most importantly, 3-pin hot-swappable switches. Of course, the standout feature here is its hot-swappable Kailh switches.

By default, the Z15 comes with either clicky Kailh Bronze switches or Linear Kailh Speed Silver switches. Right out of the box, both options are already high-quality switches. However, users can further customize their keyboards by replacing the stock Kailh switches with the upgrade kits sold by EVGA or by purchasing switches from third-party manufacturers.

The only downside here is the Z15’s 3-pin switch design. By default, this keyboard will not be compatible with many of the premium 5-pin switches offered by brands such as Gateron and Novelkeys. Users can snip the two extra feet, but that is not recommended since it is an irreversible mod.

Outside of its customizable switches, the other features of the EVGA Z15 feel standard. Gamers coming from other gaming keyboard brands will still feel right at home with the Z15 with its standard layout, configurable macros, and dedicated media keys/shortcuts.

In addition, the Z15 is no slouch when it comes to performance, as EVGA is very proud of the low latency performance of the Z15. Optical keyboard switches have many perks over their standard mechanical counterparts. They are considerably faster and are not prone to wear and tear due to the absence of metal-to-metal contact. The main downside that they have is the lack of variety.

Unlike standard mechanical keyboard switches, there are only a few brands that produce optical keyboard switches. Some notable brands, such as Razer, have adopted this technology. But aside from these brands, optical keyboards haven’t truly taken off.

The lack of variety is perfectly displayed in the Z20. Users will only have access to clicky and linear optical switches out of the box. And since this keyboard is not hot-swappable, there are no other options available.

Aside from its switches, some other notable features of the EVGA Z20 include the addition of a dedicated macropad, 4000 Hz polling rate, and a time of flight sensor. The time of flight sensor detects key movement, and it can trigger your PC to wake up or sleep depending on your activity.

Overall, the EVGA Z20 offers some unique features not found in competing gaming keyboards but also loses the customizability that the Z15 has. It is recommended for those who prioritize performance and features over keyboard switch variety and customizability.

Essentially, what this entails is that the Z12 will have a mushier feel and an overall shorter lifespan compared to its more expensive counterparts.

In addition, the Z12 only features zone RGB backlighting instead of per-key RGB backlighting. The Z12 clearly has many limitations in terms of customizability. However, it still has some saving graces.

The Z12 still features MX-style switches, meaning it is compatible with third-party keycaps. In addition, it has dedicated macro keys which can be used for both work applications and games. Lastly, the Z12 is IP32 Certified Spill-Resistant, meaning it may be able to withstand some accidental spills that you may encounter upon usage. Overall, while not the most premium or feature-packed keyboard, the EVGA Z12 is still a very good option for gamers on a tight budget.

Logitech G keyboards are the choice of some of the world’s top esports athletes because they provide performance, quality, and dependability. Logitech G keyboards used to feature Cherry MX switches; however, they recently developed their take on mechanical switches.

Logitech G switches claim to be designed for peak performance that offers different options to suit a player’s preference. Logitech G switches have three variations: Pro X, GL, and Romer-G switches providing users with more options, including low and high-profile switches.

The Pro X switches are switches exclusive to Logitech’s first-ever hot-swappable keyboard:  the Logitech G Pro X. Said keyboard is designed to be hot-swappable but only with the different variations of the Pro X switches and Cherry-MX compatible switches. 

The three (3) versions of the Pro X switches are distinct in terms of typing sound and feel. The GX Browns serve as a middle ground between the relatively loud clicky sound profile of the GX Blues and the Reds’ discreet and almost silent sound profile. Compared o the Romer G Switches, this is significantly a substantial step-up in design and functionality. 

The GX Blue clicky has an audible click with a feedback bump like a tactile feel with a 50g for average force, actuation distance of 2 mm, and a total travel distance of 3.7 mm, whereas the GX Red linear has a quiet and smooth stroke with a 50g for average force, actuation distance of 1.9 mm, and a total travel distance of 4 mm.

The GX Brown Tactile has a soft and quiet tactile bump with a 50g for average force, actuation distance of 1.9 mm, and a total travel distance of 4 mm. The only difference with the GX Red linear is the noticeable tactile bump.

GL Switches

GL Specifications

The GL switches offer traditional switches’ speed, accuracy, and performance at half the height. Logitech claims that ultra-low profile switches improve ergonomics while providing responsiveness and dependability in terms of usage. As a result, there is greater comfort and a more natural hand position.

The GL switches have three variations: the GL tactile, GL linear, and GL clicky. The GL tactiles have a noticeable tactile bump with a tactile force of 60g, 50g for average force, actuation distance of 1.5mm, and a total travel distance of 2.7 mm.

In contrast, the GL linears have a smooth and fluid keystroke with a 50g for average force, actuation distance of 1.5mm, and a total travel distance of 2.7 mm. Finally, The GL clickys have an audible click and tactile feedback with a tactile force of 60g, 50g for average force, actuation distance of 1.5mm, and a total travel distance of 2.7 mm.

Romer G Switches

One of Logitech’s earliest mechanical switch releases, the Romer-G switch, is a keyboard switch with metal contacts similar to the Cherry MX switches with the added metal contacts. The Romer G switches have the least variations in Logitech switches, with only two options to choose from.

The Romer-G tactile has a 50g tactile force, 45g for average force, actuation distance of 1.5 mm, and a total travel distance of 3.2 mm. In comparison, the Romer-G linear has a 45g for average force, actuation distance of 1.5 mm, and a total travel distance of 3.2 mm.

The Romer-G attempts to be a different and more superior mechanical switch to the Cherry MX. Some users have experienced their dismay over this mechanical switch based on many reasons, such as its non-compatibility with custom keycap sets, relatively loud sound profile, and a lot more. 

Recommended Logitech G Switches for Gaming

Logitech G’s latest offering, the Pro X/GX switches, are arguably the company’s best switches to date. They are a massive improvement over the Romer G switches in terms of typing feel and typing sound. Also, with the number of variants available, users can choose if they want a smooth and fast linear switch, a more controlled tactile switch, or a clicky switch with both tactility and audible feedback.

Alternatively, gamers can also opt for the GL switch. These switches are best suited for those who are used to or prefer the feel of laptop/chiclet keyboards. And like the GX switches, the GL switches are available in three variants, so gamers have plenty of options to choose from.

Lastly, Romer G switches are no longer recommended with how good Logitech G’s other offerings are. They are certainly still useable, especially if you are planning on picking up an older Logitech G mechanical keyboard. But overall, both the GX and GL switches are better than the Romer G in terms of sound and feel.

Recommended Logitech G Switches for Typing

The GX Brown switch is recommended for typing as it has a recognizable tactile bump that you can feel with every press. The tactile feedback during actuation provides limited feedback to give confidence and precision in the actuation moment—without being overly loud or distracting. Tactile switches are perfect for competitive and first-person shooter gaming. Alternatively, you may want to try the GL switches if you are comfortable typing with low-profile switches or on your laptop keyboard. 

Modding Logitech G Switches

Logitech switches are limited in terms of customizability, even if we are talking about the GX switches. As of now, no one has attempted to implement mods to the GX switches, even with simple mods such as lubing. Note that its unique architecture, while patterned to Cherry MXs, is still a barrier to this effect. Be that as it may, updates as to whether there is a safe way to mod the GX switches will be posted later on, so stay tuned. 

The Romer-Gs are also in the same situation. It may be best that you buy a custom mechanical keyboard instead of attempting to lube or disassemble this kind of switch, as such is not covered by your keyboard’s warranty. 

Keycap Compatibility of Logitech G Switches

Logitech G keyboards equipped with GX switches are compatible with most available keycap sets in the market as they feature the classic MX style stem. The only thing to take note of is the size and profile of the keycaps. Most gaming keyboards, including Logitech G keyboards, have North-Facing switches, so be careful when ordering Cherry profile keycaps.

Older Logitech G that use Romer G switches, on the other hand, can only fit Logitech’s keycaps designed explicitly for that kind of switch. So, unfortunately, these older keyboards are less customizable than newer Logitech G keyboards. 

Where to Buy Logitech G Switches?

You cannot buy most Logitech G switches separately from Logitech G keyboards. The only exception is the GX switches which can be purchased as an upgrade kit for the Logitech G Pro X.

Most gamers and keyboard enthusiasts are already familiar with the various colored keyboard switches. Red is mostly designated for liner switches, brown for tactile switches, and blue for clicky switches. However, in the past couple of years, many keyboard manufacturers have been making strides to develop new switches that improve several aspects of a standard keyboard switch, including its feel and durability.

The OmniPoint switch that comes with SteelSeries’ Apex Pro keyboard line-up is a switch that you can configure, per-key, to various actuation points within a reasonably wide range. It is based on the Hall Effect keyboard technology that uses magnets. It promises to bring a more durable and customizable switch to the gaming keyboard market.

In this article, we will be taking a closer look at the SteelSeries Omnipoint switches. We’ll look at how they work, the keyboards that support them, and whether or not they are worth considering.

Brief Background Behind Steelseries 

In 2001, Jacob Wolff-Petersen had started a company and named it Soft Trading. However, as time passed, the Soft Trading company began to develop more than computer accessories. Due to this, the company would change its name to the most known name today: SteelSeries.

SteelSeries had grown due to an expanding portfolio and specialties and added partnerships with various other companies within the computer manufacturing lines. As it is now, SteelSeries is a company well-known in the gaming sphere and are famous for a variety of their production lines. These lines include their mice, the Apex headsets, and keyboards.

When the SteelSeries company made the first venture into mechanical keyboards, they had also taken to the Cherry MX Switch, seeing as they had both popularity and a good reputation among the customer base. This allowed SteelSeries to focus on the rest of the keyboard in manufacturing. SteelSeries had stuck with Cherry MX switches even after the patent on the switch design itself had expired and was made public.

However, in recent times SteelSeries had decided to make a point and innovated on keyboard design and released a keyboard that would garner the attention of casual users and enthusiasts alike. A keyboard was made to be customizable so that the user could tweak the actuation force of each key they so pleased—a switch of their very own design.

In 2019, Steelseries had unveiled their new, in-house-made switches. They called it the OmniPoint switch.

The OmniPoint Switch

The OmniPoint switch had come about due to the current standard of mechanical switches. That standard being; which switch can be the fastest, easiest to actuate? This, of course, heavily leans on the preferences of a gamer’s perspective, who need rapid and sensitive keys for high-speed gaming. 

That said, there is no one size fits all, and many users who do not participate in the gaming sphere often dislike the fast switches due to the near-irritating flaw of hypersensitive switches. Even bumping a key could actuate it, which means a mess of editing for those who type more than game.

And so, enter the OmniPoint switch. The OmniPoint switch’s biggest hook is that each key has a customizable actuation point, and you, the user, can tweak any key to whatever sensitivity you need it to. There is no need to compare switches online and read through a dozen articles when you can adjust the OmniPoint switch to anything you need it to do.

The Mechanism Behind the Switches

The main difference between the OmniPoint and other switches is that there’s no contact made within the switch at any point in time. This is due to the way the switch itself is made. Omni point switches have a magnet at the bottom another magnet at the stem, and when pressed, there is a magnetic flux made for the press to be registered by the computer.

This magnetic flux is known as the Hall effect, and despite everything, Steelseries did not, in fact, invent the technology. In terms of using it in keyboard manufacturing, others had used it first: the Wooting One and Two keyboards made with Flaretech optical switches.

With the SteelSeries OmniPoint switches, you can configure each key to your preference instead of having a set actuation point across the keyboard. That configuration is measured between 0.4 to 3.6 millimeters, allowing for a great range between whatever typing speed or feel you would like.

Compatibility with Hot-swappable Keyboards

One of the main appeals of mechanical keyboards is that the switches are swappable. They’re called hot-swappable when they can be swapped even while in function. It aids in a mechanical keyboard’s longevity and customizability. So, are the OmniPoint switches hot-swappable?

Short answer: not really. The OmniPoint switch, and other switches made with the Hall Effect, are usually sold with their own complete keyboard set instead of sold individually. It is feasible, of course, to remove the switches from their out-of-box keyboard bodies, but it’s not quite advisable to do so.

Compatibility with Custom Keycaps Sets

At first blush, it does seem like the OmniPoint switch has a similar make and build as the Cherry MX switches. However, as we’ve discussed above, this isn’t the case. But what about the top part? And why would the top part be important? Indeed the switch itself is all that matters.

The top part matters because this is where custom keycaps are placed. Would it be possible if a user wants to make their own or get a new set of keycaps for their OmniPoint switches? They do look like Cherry MX stems.

Simply put, yes, mostly. Custom keycaps do fit on the OmniPoint switches, and most custom caps on the market should fit. However, there’s a catch: the OmniPoint switches are slightly thicker than actual Cherry MX stems. This means that thicker walled keycaps will be stuck when pressed. Therefore, buy your custom caps, but make sure it doesn’t have thick walls.

The Steelseries Apex Pro

When the OmniPoint switch was introduced, they weren’t unveiled as individual switches, and instead, they came with SteelSeries’ innovation on keyboard switch technology. The Apex Pro, and the Apex Pro TKL, had been marketed alongside the traditional red, blue, and brown switches in the older lines.

The keyboard sported per-key RGB backlighting, made of aircraft-grade aluminum and a removable wrist-rest attached to the device via magnetic force. A small screen to the far right, alongside a scroll wheel, allows users to go through various keyboard settings.

As customization is one of the biggest draws of the OmniPoint switch, the keyboard software allows the user to switch between up to 5 different templates. This means that a person can switch between hyper-sensitive keys to keys that must be fully depressed to be registered.

Are Keyboards with OmniPoint Switches Worth Buying?

After a read-through of everything above, it’s not hard to think that the OmniPoint switch and Apex Pro lineup of the best keyboards out there, especially since you can constantly adjust the actuation points whenever you don’t like something. And that’s undoubtedly a popular take on the product. There’s not much drawback in terms of features. If anything, the Apex Pro has more features than even the usual enthusiast may need.

As with any high-end computer peripheral, the real con is the price. Premium products come at premium prices, and so the Apex Pro comes up to nearly 10k at the Philippines’ online stores. To those who don’t have the budget for such, there’s nothing wrong with going for the other, more standard switches and sticking to your budget. The Apex Pro and OmniPoint switches can only get better from here. After all, developers can iterate on the product and improve the design as time passes.

Keyboard manufacturers often include marketing terms such as anti-ghosting in the packaging of their keyboards. Even before mechanical keyboards became popular, anti-ghosting was a big selling point for gaming keyboards. However, many users are still not aware of what it means.

Ghosting occurs when you press multiple keys simultaneously, and your other keys fail to register. Ghosting can be a real problem for gamers who must press multiple keys simultaneously. An anti-Ghosting keyboard function addresses this problem allowing users to press several keys at the same time and have all of the keystrokes register correctly.  

To further add to the confusion, the terms anti-ghosting and N-Key Rollover (NKRO) are interchanged often. So the question is, what is Anti-ghosting, and why does it matter?

In this article, we will be aiming to answer that question. We will also be differentiating it with NKRO to help users fully grasp whether Anti-ghosting is a necessary feature or just a marketing gimmick.

Ghosting in Keyboards, Defined

Before we dive into Anti-ghosting, let us first discuss keyboard ghosting. Ghosting in keyboards is a phenomenon that occurs when multiple keys are pressed simultaneously on a keyboard. When ghosting occurs, some of the pressed keys are not registered despite the keys being properly actuated. 

This may not seem like an issue for regular users, and after all, most users rarely have to actuate multiple keys simultaneously. However, ghosting can become a big problem for more demanding tasks requiring multiple key combinations.

For instance, gamers constantly press multiple keys at the same time. Some genres, such as fighting games, require precise inputs. If one of the player’s key presses does not register, that could easily make the player lose the round or the entire game. This is the reason why so many gaming keyboards heavily advertise their anti-ghosting features.

Ghost Inputs

Our previous definition is how keyboard manufacturers use the term. However, this definition is incorrect. Ghosting is traditionally referred to as having ghost inputs. In a nutshell, ghost inputs happen when a key actuates without being pressed by the user. For instance, if the user pressed multiple keys at once, an unrelated key that the user did not press can register on the screen.

However, this definition of ghosting is no longer used. This is because computer keyboards have advanced so much that ghost inputs have become rare. So for this article, we will be using the definition that manufacturers use for ghosting.

Causes of Ghosting in Keyboards

There are three possible causes of ghosting in keyboards: the lack of proper hardware to process the signals of the keyboards, dirt/debris underneath the keycaps, and the lack of proper software support for multiple key presses. First off,  many keyboard manufacturers choose to use cheaper components inside the PCB. Naturally, the result would have several limitations in the features present and the maximum number of key presses accepted.

Another reason is dirty and debris under the keycaps. This is quite common, especially since many gamers eat snacks in front of their keyboards. And when gunk accumulates underneath the keycaps, the keys become unresponsive. 

Lastly, the communication protocol between the hardware and software may limit the maximum number of simultaneous keys reported. However, it is unlikely for this to be the case with modern computer OS. 

Keyboard Rollover

Manufacturers have acknowledged that ghosting is an issue for casual and serious keyboard users. Their answer to this problem is to implement rollover in keyboards. Rollover is a hardware function that allows users to accept a specific number of inputs.

Keyboard manufacturers then used the term N-key Rollover to denote how many keys a keyboard can accept. They also introduced the term anti-ghosting, which we will be discussing next.

Defining Anti-Ghosting in Keyboards

Anti-ghosting is very similar to the function of NKRO. It aims to solve keyboard ghosting by allowing multiple user keystrokes to register. The difference between NKRO and Anti-ghosting lies in their implementation.

NKRO is almost exclusively used for mechanical keyboards because of their superior components. And depending on the keyboard model, some mechanical keyboards can even allow full NKRO throughout the entire keyboard.

On the other hand, anti-ghosting is a feature that is not exclusive to mechanical keyboards, and because anti-ghosting is more limited than NKRO, it’s only applied in certain areas, such as the WASD keys. Essentially, this means that keyboard manufacturers guarantee that the essential parts of the keyboard will register their keystrokes without fail.

Is Anti-Ghosting an Important Feature?

Despite not being quite as advanced as full NKRO support, Anti-ghosting is still a crucial feature to have. This is because manufacturers will be able to implement the benefits of NKRO in a wide range of keyboards.

Budget gaming keyboards, for instance, utilize rubber-dome switches. And as we have discussed earlier, switches based on membrane switches will not have the same accuracy or capacity to implement NKRO. But with Anti-ghosting technology, even membrane keyboard-based devices will still work decently.

In addition, Anti-ghosting can also be applied with laptop keyboards/Chiclet keyboards. This is great since not all laptop brands can accommodate mechanical keyboards. It also assures gamers can play competitive matches without resorting to using an external keyboard.
